Otonabee College TrentU

Otonabee College TrentU The College Office is located in room OCA W102 beside the vending machines across from Wenjack Theatre

Welcome to Otonabee College, the largest and most active college at Trent University. Established in 1972, OC is located on the East bank overlooking the river for which it is named. In Ojibwe, Otonabee means "river that beats like a heart" which symbolizes the way this college looks to the horizon, and imagines how we can keep up with change in our fast-paced lives while honoring our hearts. Our

motto also reflects the meaning of Otonabee in, tempora mutantur nos et mutamur in illis (the times are changing and we change with them). Our College Office staff, located in the College Office (OCA W102), are ready to support you in your academic and personal development. Drop by and visit Lindsay Mitchell, our Academic Advisor, Erin Stewart Eves, our Academic Skills Instructor or Stephanie Muehlethaler, the College Principal of Otonabee College. Our friendly College Life Ambassadors will help you to decide who you need to see. They may also direct you to our OC cabinet, a dynamic group of student leaders who run your OC student government. The college is also a place for all students of every year of study to call home. Come relax with your fellow OC students in the OC Commons, our central student space located near the Wenjack Theatre. College events such as Wildside and the College Weekend are located both on and off campus, convenient for students of all years to have fun and show your OC spirit - there is something for everyone throughout the year. -- This Geography Alumni Said Yes to Almost Everything at Trent Mapping a Course to AVP in Higher Ed --

Student leadership, campus jobs, and governance experience shaped Chris Glover ’01’s path beyond graduation

When Chris Glover ’01 (Otonabee College) arrived at Trent to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Geography, he was not mapping out a future in university administration. Like most students, he was focused on finding his place and saying “yes” to the opportunities before him.

“I loved the energy of proud Trent student leaders who demonstrated immense passion for their college and the university,” Glover explains. “I would not be in the position I am in today without my experience at Trent, the friendships developed there, and the mentorship I received".

In his first year, he served as a first-year representative on the Trent Central Student Association (TCSA) Board of Directors, worked at the Cat’s Ass Pub (popular OC on-campus pub), volunteered with Walk Home, played recreational hockey, and even acted in a play! Through student government and campus employment, he gained firsthand experience with decision-making, accountability, and student advocacy.

Over the next several years, Glover took on increasing responsibility, joining Otonabee College Cabinet as Commissioner to the TCSA and later stepping into senior student leadership roles, including acting vice-president of membership services and, in his final year, president of the TCSA.
“Serving on OC Cabinet was my first real exposure to governance and policy work,” he says. “Together with my other leadership roles, it opened my eyes to career pathways in higher education beyond graduation.”

Glover’s career in higher education began at Trent, where he worked in Athletics and Recreation before moving into Student Affairs, supporting orientation, leadership development, and student transition initiatives. After leaving Trent, he worked in residence at Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, followed by a position at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in a role focused on student leadership and career services. For the last ten years he has been working at Lakehead University, most recently as the Associate Vice President, Administration, Orillia Campus.
“I oversee athletics and recreation in my current role, and that often takes me back to playing campus rec hockey as a student and to my time working in Athletics and Recreation at Trent,” Glover reflects.

“The lessons I learned then continue to guide and inform my work today. I am eternally grateful for the life-long friendships I have made during my time at Trent, especially during the early days of living in OC. I recommend to current and future Trent students to try a bit of everything, stay open-minded, and do not take yourself too seriously.”

🎉Alumni Spotlight: Celebrating Amelia (Amy) Graves ‘16🎉

Amy Graves is a proud two-time Trent alum, graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English, and again in 2024 with a Bachelor of Education, specializing in Intermediate/Senior English and Drama. 🎓📚

During her undergraduate years, Amy was deeply involved in many aspects of campus life. Especially within Otonabee College. She held several leadership roles, including Community Representative, Social Representative, and OC TCSA Commissioner. Beyond Otonabee, she served as a Student Ambassador with Recruitment and Admissions, and was an elected executive member of the Anne Shirley Theatre Company, where she proudly contributed to annual
productions. 🎭💫

Amy’s Trent journey extended into her B.Ed. studies, during which she joined the Student Housing team. She served as a Residence Life Don in Otonabee and later as a Senior Residence Life Don at Traill College. 🏡

However, Amy’s Trent roots run even deeper—she is also the child of two Trent alumni who met in 1986 while living in C-House at Otonabee. 💙✨

After completing her B.Ed., Amy took on an exciting opportunity just outside of London, UK, where she taught high school English and Drama. 🎭 ✏️

Following a year filled with learning and growth, she returned to Trent to take on the role of Residence Life Coordinator.

“Returning to Trent as a pro-staff now is such an incredible experience. Stepping back on campus after being across an ocean for a year, I felt such a profound sense of relief and calm. I was home. I love being surrounded by a community of people who are also so passionate about this place, the colleges, and the students.” 🏫💬

Amy shares that her favourite time on campus is always the start of the academic year. Move-In Day and Orientation Week hold a special place in her heart.

“Some of my top memories and best friends came from my involvement with O-Week.”
🎉🤝

When asked if she had any advice or inspiration to share with students and fellow alumni, Amy offered this:

“I would say investing in your community and nurturing those connections is so important. I hold my community at Trent so close to my heart, and it has given me the opportunity to both provide and receive such incredible support—personally, academically, and professionally. Paying attention to where I have felt like I've been a part of something special, and bigger than myself, has brought me back home to Trent year after year.” 💬💙🌟

🎉 Alumni Spotlight: Celebrating Christopher Graves (Class of ‘86) 🎉

Christopher graduated from Trent University in 1989 with a BA in English and History. Throughout his time on campus, he made significant contributions to the Trent community. As the Yearbook Editor for Otonabee College during the 1988-89 academic year, he helped document the memories and experiences of his fellow students. However, his leadership skills didn’t stop there as they’ve guided him throughout his professional life as he now serves as the Executive Director of Project HOPE, an organization that partners with indigenous church-based and para-church initiatives in southern African countries to create sustainable solutions for widows and orphans. Since 2010 he has been leading the charge to promote effective, long-term strategies to strengthen communities in Africa. 🌍💡

Beyond his impactful work with Project HOPE, Christopher is also an accomplished author, having published Walk the Villages in 2023, a book that highlights the vital work being done to support vulnerable populations in Africa. One of his proudest moments came when he was selected to deliver the Last Lecture at Otonabee College in 2019, reflecting on his journey and sharing insights from his years of experience. 📚🎤

In Christopher's personal life, one could argue that his connection to Trent runs deep—his very first class at Trent, held in the Wenjack Theatre in 1986, was where he met his wife, Denise Nickel. In a full-circle moment, 33 years later, both were back in the Wenjack Theatre for the Last Lecture, with their daughter, Amelia Graves (Otonabee College), in the audience. This moment was a testament to the lasting impact Trent and Otonabee has had on his life. ✨👨‍👩‍👧

Christopher is also excited to share that his daughter graduated in June 2024, further cementing the family's strong ties to Trent University. Join us in congratulating Christopher for his incredible achievements, both professionally and personally, and for continuing to live out the values of Otonabee College! 🎓💙
