Fleming College - CYC Program

Fleming College - CYC Program Advanced Diploma Practitioners provide assistance through a variety of treatment strategies and work as an integral part of a treatment team.

Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs) are involved in all facets of care from intake, to assessment, to program planning, to goal formulation, and intervention. Child Youth Counsellors team up with teachers, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists as well as other social services providers to deliver a holistic approach to caregiving. This program ensures that you will acquire the necessary

skills for employment as a Child and Youth Worker and it is designed to meet or exceed upcoming accreditation requirements in this field. Three work placements provide varied practical experience and ample opportunity to hone skills to interact with this often challenging client group. Courses include innovative and best practices required by the industry, such as trauma-informed practice and treating the family, as well as group dynamics, counselling, advocacy, legislation, crisis intervention, and family dynamics. The philosophy of the program is to be thoroughly involved with the individual, using everyday occurrences as learning opportunities for growth and empowerment. The curriculum also encourages self-reflective practice of personal values, beliefs, attitudes and assumptions relating to human behavior and relationships. You will also learn self-care strategies to help navigate the impact of working in this sector. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be eligible to join the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors.

We are proud of Jen Howland, whose journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA, she achieved academic excellence while navigating life as a solo mom, working multiple jobs, and serving as the student representative for her cohort. Throughout her studies, she consistently uplifted the voices of her peers, championing inclusion, support, and equity.

Her unwavering dedication has also been recognized beyond the program —she is a proud recipient of the 2025 Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award, provided to a woman overcoming obstacles to pursue education and build a better future.

She intends to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care, and hopes for a career walking alongside and supporting youth who have experienced sexual exploitation and trafficking.

To our graduate: your resilience, leadership, and purpose-driven path are a beacon of hope. We are honoured to have been part of your story—and we can’t wait to see the lives you continue to impact.

Tara Winney, Fleming Child and Youth Care graduate, June 2024, was awarded the CycAssets.ca Professional Development Award for her continued learning in the field. Congratulations Tara!

Tara is a force to be reckoned with, and she doesn’t even realize her influence - a humility that makes her presence that much more powerful. Her willingness to be raw and vulnerable has allowed many others to do the same, this has led to some insatiable growth in the graduating class of 2024.

Tara epitomizes meaningful moments, reflecting on what works what doesn’t and what more can be done. She is always becoming a C*C regardless of how much work she’s done before.

Tara is a mature student who previously has a broadcasting diploma and is hoping to blend the two in her advocacy for the Child and Youth Care field. She currently holds a position with a local school board.

Tara has also recently added published author to the list of her talents! Check out her article in the September edition of C*C-Net C*C-Online journal.

Coincidentally, this lovely group of individuals officially received their diplomas earlier today !

Congratulations class of 2023, we celebrate your perseverance and love for this beautiful field!

Give it up for C*CP students staying engaged in our classrooms! Congratulations, Fleming College students for being nominated for the Outstanding Child and Youth Care Students Award!

"Having completed two thirds of their advanced diploma in emergency remote delivery format and only experiencing being on-campus together for one semester, this group formed a special bond with each other that allowed them to be better together. Each one, having had at least one significant life stressor, they managed to overcome obstacles on the energy of peer encouragement while at the same time never losing focus on the best interest of other. They led a moving basic needs fundraiser for a local youth agency, and all stepped into the role of advocate, teaching to do for self, in their final practicums." - Heather, Helen and Deb

On May 14, 2023 take some time out of your day to learn and share what First Voice Advocates have to say about enhancing critical supports for children and youth in the child welfare.

Save the date! May 14 is and this year we’re asking the question: Are you there for kids in care? to remind community, government, and service providers that these young people continue to need critical supports. We want all Ontarians to think about how they can support the well-being and success of children and youth in the child welfare system.

We are pleased to have partnered with on this year’s campaign.

Check out our new campaign materials at oacas.org/forgetmenot and join us on May 14!

Our Story

Way more than just a program…..we are a family, where relationship building and maintenance are just as important as academics!

Course delivery is highly interactive and play based using hands-on activities that are fun and engaging. No two learners are alike. Therefore, teaching will involve an integrated learning approach including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques to create a classroom in which a variety of learning needs may be addressed.

While Fleming C*C will provide you with specific learning tasks created to help you achieve the outcomes of our program, many of them are designed to offer choice of learning so that you can explore those topics and areas which most appeals to you.

Unique and extensive stream of courses related to children’s mental health, trauma and advocacy that can’t be found elsewhere.
