TUFA was proud to stand alongside our colleagues and community members at the All Out for Education Rally hosted by the Peterborough and District Labour Council.

We were strongly represented, with TUFA President Moira Howes delivering remarks highlighting the urgent need for change (unfortunately the audio did not come through in the recording—full text below), alongside Vice-President and Incoming President Dwayne Collins, Member-at-Large and Incoming Vice-President Karleen Pendleton Jimenez, and Executive Director Marcus Harvey, who fully embraced the call to wear red in a standout jumpsuit. TUFA Communications and Member Engagement Coordinator Kodie Trahan-Guay was also in attendance.

The rally brought together workers, students, and community members to speak out against ongoing changes to the education system, including cuts and restructuring impacting institutions like Trent University and beyond. It was a strong and visible show of solidarity and a reminder of what collective action can look like.

Moira’s speech:
TUFA stands with all education workers in Ontario

The Chronic underfunding of education in Ontario, Canada’s most populated province, is harming young people, and doing so at a time when they need our support more than ever.

Chronic, serious underfunding is weakening our future prospects as a province, and doing so at a time when we are facing serious economic challenges, as well as threats to our sovereignty, our health, and our climate.

Experts in education are not included at the table where major decisions are being made about our educational system. The government is excluding the expertise of early childhood educators, elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and vice principals, apprenticeship sponsors, college and university professors and administrators, Indigenous experts in education, and of course, most dear to us all, students. Ignoring expertise in the face of major decisions with high stakes is foolish. It is not, I would suggest, the Canadian way.

TUFA stands with all education workers. We challenge the province to do better.

If we want strong universities, we need proper public funding.
Underfunding fuels precarious contracts, inequitable pay, and fewer supports for students.

Investing in our universities means stable jobs for contract faculty, & better education for everyone.

📅 Save the Date – March 11, 2026

On Wednesday, March 11, OCUFA will host its annual Contract Faculty Social Media Day of Action.

This year’s theme, Stop the Gigification of Faculty Work, highlights the growing reliance on precarious academic labour and what it means for faculty, students, and the future of our universities.

We encourage faculty, librarians, students, and campus allies to join the conversation and show solidarity with contract faculty across Ontario.

Laurentian University faculty are facing a strike deadline on January 19.
The government’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) Exit Loan restrictions are blocking progress on fair pensions, wages that keep up, and manageable workloads.

Join LUFA and OCUFA in calling on the Ministry and Laurentian’s Board of Governors to lift the remaining CCAA controls and allow fair, free collective bargaining.

📣 Ontario faculty, staff, and students: we need your voice!

Bill 33, the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025, threatens the autonomy and quality of Ontario’s public colleges and universities. Instead of addressing chronic underfunding, this legislation gives the government more power to control how institutions operate, adding red tape while Ontario remains last in the country for per-student funding.

Students, staff, and faculty have also been excluded from major decisions like the government’s so-called Blue Ribbon Panel on postsecondary education. This lack of transparency risks more privatization, program cuts, and precarious work, all of which weaken the foundation of our postsecondary system and the communities it supports.

TUFA members and supporters are calling on MPPs in Peterborough and Durham to oppose or amend Bill 33 and push for real investment, transparency, and consultation in our public education system.

📨 Take action: send a letter to your local MPP urging them to protect the autonomy and sustainability of Ontario’s colleges and universities. Our institutions are public resources. Let us keep them strong, inclusive, and accountable.
