Shining a light on gender-based violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of intimate partner violence and the broader issue of gender-based violence.

The Purple Light Nights campaign is part of this effort, using purple lights to show solidarity, support survivors and encourage community action.

The Purple Lights flag will be raised at the Prince George campus on Oct. 15, known nationally as Purple Thursday, and remain flying until Oct. 30. The campus skylights will also glow purple at the start and end of the campaign, serving as a visible reminder of the ongoing importance of raising awareness, fostering discussion and providing opportunities for community engagement.

UNBC is joining with the Prince George Violence Against Women in Relationships committee in supporting the campaign. The Northern Women's Centre, Northern Fire and a number of faculty members are contributing to a series of events, including a virtual Night of Creativity Against Violence on Oct. 20, featuring researchers who use art-based methods to examine intimate partner violence.

Sexual violence doesn’t always look the way we expect, and it can show up in everyday campus moments.

You might notice something feels off, then hesitate:
Am I overreacting?
Is it my place to step in?
What if I make things worse?

That hesitation is normal. Being more than a bystander isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about noticing that pause and choosing a response that prioritizes safety and care.

Depending on the situation and what feels safe, you could Speak Up, Create a Distraction, Check In or Get Support.

One small action can help interrupt sexual violence.

Cheering on the Timberwolves!

Elementary students from School District 57 and local independent schools filled the stands at Masich Place Stadium to cheer on the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team for a matinee game against the visiting Alberta Golden Bears.

The crowd was treated to an exciting 2-2 draw, plus a science-based half-time show led by Chemistry Professor Dr. Todd Whitcombe and the UNBC Active Minds team.

UNBC has posted its best-ever research environment score in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, with the largest single-year increase to date.

Scores rose in four of the five pillars used to rank nearly 2,300 universities worldwide, including in the teaching category where UNBC matched its best-ever score.

"Research and teaching are at the heart of UNBC’s mission to ignite, inspire and lead change. It is wonderful to see that strength recognized in those pillars in the latest Times Higher Education World University rankings," says UNBC Interim President Dr. Bill Owen. "These results show that the North is the future for ideas, discovery and learning."

A warm welcome to UNBC's newest international students!

The International Social was an opportunity to learn more about the resources and supports available at the Prince George campus, foster connections and share a meal.

Staff who have come to UNBC from around the world also shared tips on making the most of life and learning in northern B.C., from getting involved on campus and in Prince George to exploring all the region has to offer.

"Every day, you are contributing to the University community," UNBC Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu told the students gathered in the Bentley Centre. "You are helping to create a diverse community with your perspectives. You belong here. It is our distinct pleasure and honour to have you here."
