ORTM: Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management The ORTM program at UNBC offers undergraduate graduate degrees in outdoor recreation and conservatio At the graduate level we offer MA, MSc, MNRES and Ph.D.

The ORTM program at UNBC offers undergraduate degrees (majors and minors) and graduate degrees in outdoor recreation and conservation and nature-based tourism. At the u-grad level we offer a BA in Nature-based Tourism Management and a BSc in Natural Resource Management with a Major in Outdoor Recreation and Conservation. Various streams are available in either degree including outdoor education and leadership, tourism marketing, and aboriginal tourism. degrees in natural resource and environmental studies with specializations in outdoor recreation, conservation and tourism.

Two elections are coming up in B.C. - just one week apart. ️🌲

Local elections: Saturday, October 17
Provincial election: Saturday, October 24

Both matter for outdoor recreation and quality of life in our communities.

Local governments make decisions about trails, parks, active transportation, community planning and recreation infrastructure. The provincial government has a major role in public lands, trails and recreation sites, resource road access, provincial parks, conservation and funding for outdoor recreation.

If you care about outdoor recreation and its role in healthy communities and local economies, this is a good time to make your voice heard.

Before you vote:
🥾 Find out where your local and provincial candidates stand on outdoor recreation.
🌲 Ask how they will support trails, parks and access to the outdoors.
🛠️ Ask how they will support the volunteer organizations and community groups that care for the places, access and recreation opportunities people rely on across B.C.
🗺️ Ask how outdoor recreation will be considered in land-use planning, community development and economic development decisions.

And most importantly: make a plan to vote.

Outdoor recreation contributes to our health, communities and economy.

Elections are an opportunity to make sure the people making decisions understand that.

Outdoor recreation is becoming a local election issue.

In Squamish, mayoral candidates are being asked what they would do to support outdoor recreation, a good example of how recreation groups can bring these issues into the election conversation.

Local governments make decisions that affect trails, parks, access, recreation infrastructure, planning and investment. With B.C.’s municipal elections coming up on October 17, now is a good time to ask candidates where they stand and what they would actually do.

What is outdoor recreation worth to the economy?

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis has released its latest numbers: outdoor recreation contributed US$696.7 billion to U.S. GDP in 2024, accounting for 2.4% of the national economy and 5.2 million jobs.

What’s interesting for B.C. is not just the size of the U.S. outdoor recreation economy, but how it is measured. The analysis captures economic activity across recreation, travel, accommodation, retail, manufacturing, transportation and other industries.

The Province of BC is now working toward its own Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account, a more consistent way to measure and report the economic value of outdoor recreation in the province.

We already know the sector directly contributed an estimated $4.8 billion to B.C.’s economy in 2023. A satellite account should give us an even stronger picture of outdoor recreation’s role in our economy and communities, and a better foundation for future investment and decision-making.
