Graduation is only a couple days away!!

You have been so ambitious this year Janessa, not just challenging your self with scale and technique but also with the vulnerability of content. We will miss your warmth and work ethic in the studio!
.....

My name is Janessa Tejada, and I just finished my 2nd year of the BFA program. I will be transferring to AUArts to complete the rest of my program. My work revolves around the female body, specifically my body, body image, and femininity.

One of my favourite memories were the late night grinds in the studios whether it was by myself or with Ava and Holly. I enjoyed having the studio to ourselves where we would blast music and work until we lost our minds.

My advice for future students would be to keep making! It doesn’t have to be perfect, and sometimes projects won’t turn out the way you want and that is okay! Ask for advice and ask questions. Your colleagues and instructors are there for you!

Hi, my name is Aria, and I’m graduating from the Visual Art Diploma program. I'm an Artist who loves to explore and experiment with different mediums in my art practice. The practices I love the most are Sculpture and Printmaking.

Looking back, the thing I’ll miss the most about RDP are the instructors and the studio spaces. The instructors were always supportive and understanding, and they genuinely cared about helping us grow as artists and people. The studios and tech gave me the freedom to experiment, make mistakes, problem-solve, and express in every possible way.

One of my favorite experiences was participating in critiques, I loved hearing everyone’s different perspectives and approaches because it always opened my mind in new ways and made the environment feel more connected and comfortable. (my personal favorites were the unique approaches to tackle a crit where everyone felt included and the pot-luck crits...I'll definitely miss those XD)

My advice to future students is don’t be afraid to talk to your instructors when you’re struggling or confused—they really do want to help. Also, make friends and talk to your classmates because you all will become a part of an art community, and those connections matter a lot both for your creativity and career ahead.

Never forget to enjoy your time while making art at RDP and with some supportive friends it just keeps getting better and better:)

Next up is Fiona!

We will miss Fiona's quiet leadership and focused presence in the studio. It has been incredible seeing you develop an eye for detail and be brave enough to push yourself!!

Hi! My name is Fiona and I am graduating from the Visual Arts program.

I have so many great memories from these past two years, and I’m grateful to have spent it alongside so many incredible artists. My peers and instructors are what made it a truly wonderful experience, so much inspiration and appreciation and fun. I will miss the friends I’ve made and the classroom experience of being surrounded by people who get you.

To future students: The hard work is always worth it! Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and try new things. You are capable of more than you might think. You will discover the amazing support system of peers and instructors at RDP, don’t feel like you have to do anything alone. And as Aly might tell you, keep being ambitious!

Grad spotlight!!!

We are so excited to see what Dominic does next! We will miss his fierce focus and wild growth mindset, it has been amazing to watch him get stronger and stronger over the last two years!

I am Dominic and I am in the BFA program. I finished up my time at RDP and am transferring to AuArts for the fall semester! I love to explore themes of nostalgia, nature, healing, etc. I also love experimenting with different mediums and techniques of creating.

I had an amazing time at RDP and will definitely miss my classmates as well as all of the great teachers and techs.

My advice for future students is to keep pushing forward and try your best. You will improve and grow a lot if you put in the hard work!

Next up, meet Ava!

We will miss their dogged work ethic, their persistent questions and eagerness to always push themselves to improve!

My name is Ava Stang, and I’ve just completed my Visual Art Diploma, and will be going on to AuArts to complete my Bachelor of Fine Arts.

In my practice Ive been exploring gender dysphoria as a transgender male. Using deer as a metaphor for myself has been a way to open up about these complex feelings without directly including myself in the art.

One of my favourite memories is from my very first day of first year, in sculpture class, when Teena made us make face molds with people who, at the time were strangers. I was paired with Janessa, and as she smeared vaseline over my face we could not stop laughing. We were the only people laughing in a class that was other wise silent. This class was a catalyst to some of the best memories I’ve made over my time spent at RDP.

My advice for future students is to constantly bounce ideas off of the friends you make at RDP. Having people around you that can add deeper meanings or an interesting compositional choice is super important to having less stale or stiff pieces, and many of the brainstorming by sessions had with my classmates bettered my art significantly.

We are one week away from convocation!!

So we are going to spend that week celebrating our graduates!

We will kick things off with Isabelle! Isabelle brings joy and laughter to the classroom and is never afraid to ask questions, rebuild and push past their comfort zone. Isabelle is this years winner of the Affair of the Arts Visual Art Legacy Scholarship for Outstanding studio performance!

My name is Isabelle Serediak, I am a nature nut and a music lover. I am graduating from the BFA transfer program and plan to continue onto my bachelor very soon. My art revolves around the love and preservation of nature here in Canada and around the world. Nature is our most precious resource for living a happy and full life and I want to spread awareness of how we can and should protect it.

My advice for future students is don't be afraid of your ideas, go big and don't shy away from the work. You'll be surprised at what you can make when you allow yourself to create past your comfort zone.
I will definitely miss the people I met and my fellow students. We became wonderful colleagues and great friends and having that support system here at RDP was something I never expected to happen, but I am very happy that it did. Never take for granted those around you, they have amazing ideas and they will push you to be a better artist.
