The Faculty of Education at the University of Regina has a reputation for strong undergraduate teacher education programs, graduate programs, and adult education. The Faculty has excellent longstanding relationships with educational agencies in the province of Saskatchewan and has been a leader in educational developments over the years. Our motto, "Transformative Education Transformed," is reflected in the abstract logo of the emergence of a butterfly from a cocoon symbolic of the Faculty, which is always emerging, and in the process transforming what education means while being transformed by those new understandings. First Discussion Night: Teaching with the Treaties
What can teaching and learning look like when we engage thoughtfully with treaties, relationships, and our shared responsibilities?

Mentorship in Action | Contest Winner🎉
📸 Congratulations to Ava Frain, a teacher candidate from our Baccalauréat en éducation française (le Bac) program, and her cooperating teacher, Carolynne Chateigner, at Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon!
Their photo has been selected as the winner of our Mentorship in Action prize draw, and they will receive two YETI cups! 🥤
Ava shared the story behind their photo:
“To celebrate the first day with students, and teaching my first Grade 9 French immersion lesson, we took a couple of pictures in my little corner of the classroom! One is a silly picture to show our humour of Carolynne pretending to be harsh, and then a nice picture of us two ready to conquer this school year!”
What a wonderful snapshot of mentorship and the excitement of beginning a new school year. We love seeing the many ways Faculty of Education interns and cooperating teachers learn, teach and grow together throughout their internship experiences.
A big thank you to everyone who participated in our photo contest and shared these wonderful moments with us! 👏

« Pour célébrer notre première journée avec les élèves et mon premier cours de français en immersion en 9e année, nous avons pris quelques photos dans mon petit coin de la classe! L’une des photos est amusante et montre notre sens de l’humour, avec Carolynne qui fait semblant d’être sévère. L’autre est une belle photo de nous deux, prêtes à relever les défis de cette nouvelle année scolaire! »
Quelle belle illustration du mentorat et de l’enthousiasme qui accompagnent le début d’une nouvelle année scolaire! Nous aimons voir les nombreuses façons dont les stagiaires et les enseignant·es coopérant·es de la Faculté d’éducation apprennent, enseignent et grandissent ensemble tout au long de leur expérience de stage.
Un grand merci à toutes les personnes qui ont participé à notre concours de photographie et qui ont partagé ces beaux moments avec nous! 👏

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Frederick Bessai, a beloved teacher, mentor, colleague, and founding member of the University of Regina’s Faculty of Education.
Dr. Bessai passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 93. Throughout his remarkable career, he was committed to learning, teaching, and most importantly, nurturing his students.
This 1998 photo captures a powerful testament to that commitment. Standing beside Dr. Bessai is a stack of graduate theses he supervised, each representing a student whose academic journey he helped guide. The stack was taller than he was! 📚
For Dr. Bessai, those theses were more than books. They represented students, relationships, and the opportunity to help others learn and grow. His influence lives on through the many educators and students whose lives he touched.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Bessai’s family, friends, former students, and colleagues. His legacy of caring deeply about students and the pursuit of knowledge will remain an important part of the University of Regina.

Yesterday, Dean Dr. James Nahachewsky had the opportunity to travel north through our beautiful province to visit the wonderful staff and students at NSITEP (North Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program) in Air Ronge.

NSITEP is a highly successful partnership between the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Gabriel Dumont Institute and the University of Regina that supports the education and retention of teachers in Northern Saskatchewan communities.

Many thanks to third-year student Madison Deschambeault for the tour and to Program Director Julius Park for hosting the visit.

🌿 Indigenous Research: Connecting Spirit, Story, and Scholarship 🌿

Join us for an evening dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the research and scholarly accomplishment of Indigenous students. The Faculty of Education at the University of Regina and the First Nations University of Canada invite students, faculty, and community members to our 2026 Indigenous Research Event.
This year, we are incredibly honored to feature a keynote address from Bill Cook, alongside inspiring research presentations from graduate students Noela Crowe-Salazar and Micheal Langan.

Come together to honor Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day
This morning, staff and faculty members of the Faculty of Education gathered at the Education Student Services Office wearing orange shirts to mark the day and reflect on our shared responsibility for truth, learning and reconciliation.
Here on Treaty 4 Territory, we are grateful for the opportunity to learn and work together, and to build relationships with our community partners in Treaty 6 Territory.
The tipi raised on the northwest lawn of the Education Building will remain in place through October, serving as a visible reminder of the importance of listening, learning and continuing the work of reconciliation.

🎉 Congratulations to two outstanding Faculty of Education alumni recognized at last night’s University of Regina Alumni Awards!
👏 Jodie Metcalfe Bray, BPAS’00, BEd’02, MEd’11, received the Dr. Robert & Norma Ferguson Outstanding Service Award, recognizing her many contributions to education, sport and community.
🏀 Betty (Hoffart) Fornwald, BEd’81, was inducted into the 2026 Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating her trailblazing career with the Cougettes and her lasting impact on University of Regina women’s basketball.
We are so proud to celebrate the achievements and contributions of these two very worthy Education alumni. Congratulations, Jodie and Betty!

🌿 The University of Regina community had the opportunity to witness Cree artist Jerry Whitehead (Peter Chapman First Nation) bring a Tipi design to life in collaboration with students.

The completed Tipi will be raised on the northwest lawn of the Education Building, leading into a time of reflection and learning as we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. We look forward to seeing this artwork, funded by the Faculty of Education, become part of our campus and creating another opportunity for learning, connection and reflection.

A special thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life.

This initiative is proudly presented by the Faculty of Education’s Chair of Indigenization, Dr. Anna-Leah King, and the Reconciliation Action Committee, with support from the ta-tawâw Student Centre, La Cité universitaire francophone, and the Dr. John Archer Library & Archives.
