Next step in my research project on the role of microbats in the dispersal of mycorrhizal fungi in the New England Tablelands, NSW, Australia: Detecting and identifying fungal spores in bat droppings under the microscope. Hard but really interesting challenge!

I'm a studying the role of microbats in the dispersal of mycorrhizal fungi in the New England Tablelands, NSW, Australia. To do so, I captured microbats in the field and collected their droppings which will be examined to detect the presence of fungal spores. Since fungi that grow from these spores are a vital part of healthy natural ecosystems, information about the ecological role that microbats play in dispersing these beneficial fungi is an important yet little known potential ecosystem service.

Mauricio Bedoya was in a meeting with EPCOR's staff in the Water Excellence Lab located in Edmonton (Alberta). As part of his experience, this QES Scholar is examining the climate sensitivity and historical trends in groundwater levels in the North Saskatchewan River Basin. The overall result is a piece of support for EPCOR’s Climate Change Strategy.

In order to understand and reconstruct past climate and environmental changes in the region of Eastern Andean Colombian Cordillera, we are performing different analysis on sediment cores collected in Lake Tota, the deepest high altitude lake in Colombia.

Please consider supporting our Matthew Noakes from , South Africa who, with our support, will be participating in the ride to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research.

The ride will be approximately 55 km around Waskesiu Lake, a town in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan.

MS is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system. The cause of MS is not currently known, but is thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The prevalence of MS in Canada is higher than anywhere else in the world, with the highest rate occurring in Saskatchewan.

Matthew aims to raise $1000 CAD for MS research. We would highly appreciate any help to get him closer to his goal! Feel free to share his profile, linked below, with your friends, family, and anyone else you think might consider making a contribution.

Evidence shows that the Guajira Desert in Northern Colombia had a very different ecosystem with large rivers and more precipitation. At some point during the last 2.7 million years this ecosystem changed dramatically to what it is now. For this reason, we are working with climate modellers to understand why we see this change and what the climate forcing mechanism. - This is what Jaime Escobar, an Early Career Research from is working on through the QES-AS program!
