Retirement may be decades away, but the best time to think about your pension is before you need one.

For people in their 20s and 30s, retirement often competes with more immediate priorities: rent or a mortgage, student loans, credit-card debt, an emergency fund and saving for a first home. In his latest article for The Conversation, Professor of Finance Ernest Biktimirov discusses three decisions that matter especially for younger adults:

1) Know what retirement benefits you already have
2) Put competing financial goals in a sensible order
3) Start planning early, even if you cannot save much yet.

He says the goal isn’t necessarily to maximize retirement savings in your 20s, but to make deliberate financial choices now so that short-term pressures don’t quietly become a long-term retirement problem.

Ten accomplished Goodman alumni have come together with a shared vision: investing in the next generation of business leaders.

Now they are calling on their fellow grads to do the same.

Together, they’ve founded the Goodman Legacy initiative, which aims to elevate the Goodman brand, amplify the School’s engaged ambassador network and grow investment in a transformational capital fund to support the future of business education at Brock.

Already, the initiative has raised $765,000 towards their $2 million goal, supporting scholarships, student competition teams, food insecurity initiatives and alumni programming.

In addition to supporting the fundraising goal, the Council is also encouraging grads to give back in other ways, including through student mentorship, hiring Goodman students and participating in Goodman alumni events.

Professor of Marketing and Consumer Psychology, Antonia Mantonakis, gave a passionate address to the graduating class of 2026 from our School last Friday, reminding us all of the importance of being human and celebrating the things, and experiences, that make us unique in an increasingly digitized world.

Antonia's innovative approaches to connecting students to class material, her early adoption of experiential learning and her commitment to sustained mentorship earned her the 2026 Goodman School of Business Excellence in Teaching Award.

Professor of Marketing and Consumer Psychology Antonia Mantonakis encouraged the Class of 2026 to remember that the ability to feel things deeply is their superpower and is something that artificial intelligence (AI) will never have during her Convocation address to Goodman’s newest graduates.

“In an era of AI and algorithms we all need to be more human. We need to connect to ourselves, to our emotions, to these moments, to music and our autobiographical memories.”

The Brock community is mourning the passing of Ken Klassen (BAdmin ’87), Professor of Operations Management, who will be remembered for his integrity and compassion.

Ken passed away on Saturday, June 13 and is survived by wife Anita and children Jared, Larissa, Caleb, Benjamin and Josiah.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a dedicated colleague, passionate educator and good friend. He lived with decency, kindness and a generosity of spirit that touched many lives. We are all better for knowing him, and he will not be forgotten.” - Barry Wright, Dean, Goodman School of Business

Ken's most visible impact on our School, however, was his work as project lead for both the Goodman School of Business Building Addition and Renovation project and the MCA 200 level renovation that created the Goodman Student Success Centre.

“His leadership helped shape spaces that bring students together and support their success. His vision and commitment have created a lasting legacy that is woven into the very fabric of Goodman."
