Do you like old things? Do you have an interest in archaeology? Have you ever wondered what archaeologists do?

Join the AIA Niagara Peninsula Society on Sunday, March 23, 2025 for our first Archaeology Fair from 12:00-3:00PM in the Global Commons (International Centre, Brock University). This event is free and interactive for ages 7+ and anyone who has an interest in learning about the excavation process. Attendees will be handed a passport to help them navigate the various phases in archaeology via mini activities, including tables for “survey”, “excavation”, “analysis”, and “publication”. Upon completing the activities, guests will be able to create their own clay replica of an artifact to take home!

Attendees must register prior to the event, owing to available space, and once registered can drop-in between 12:00-3:00PM. To register scan the QR code, use the link on the flyer, or click the link below. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

Join us on Tues. March 25th, 2025 at 2:30 PM for our upcoming talk, "Something More to Say? The Visual Language of Performance on Greek Vases" by visiting guest lecturer, Tyler Jo Smith (University of Virginia)!

01/15/2025

The new year brings an amazing new slate of talks, beginning this Sunday. Maria Liston (Department of Anthropology, University of Waterloo) will present, "Ancient Enemies: Skeletons of Macedonians and the Theban Sacred Band from the Battle of Chaironeia, 338 BCE." Help us welcome Professor Liston in person on Sunday, January 19th at 3:00 pm in Academic South (STH) 215. We look forward to seeing you there!

Here's an abstract of the lecture:
In 338 BCE Macedonian forces under the command of Phillip II and his son Alexander defeated a combined Greek force of Athenians, Thebans, and others near the town of Chaironeia, establishing Macedonia dominance over much of the Greek mainland. Anchoring the Greek line was the Theban Sacred Band, an elite military unit consisting of 150 pairs of hoplite soldiers, who were purportedly lovers as well as comrades in arms. Opposite them on the Macedonian left was the cavalry force led by Alexander. Early excavations on the battlefield recovered skeletons of the Theban soldiers interred at the Lion Monument near Chaironeia, and the cremated remains of an elite group of Macedonian soldiers, probably the cavalry. This lecture presents evidence from these skeletons for death on the and explores the use and efficacy of weapons and armor in ancient warfare.
