Long before Lindsay Taylor (BA ’19) began her master’s in Earth Sciences at , she was already planting the seeds for a community-based research project exploring green infrastructure and sustainable flood mitigation strategies.

With help from partners across the region, Taylor has established research sites on City of St. Catharines property, including at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre - St. Catharines, as well as at Silver Spire Church.

“I wanted community involvement and applied science to be at the heart of the project,” she says, adding that her work was inspired by the ways research, community knowledge and practical solutions could be intertwined to create greener, more resilient neighbourhoods.

Brad Rossen (MBE ’16) used to cheer for the Toronto Maple Leafs as a kid. Now, the grad is helping to build out the NHL team’s analytics department as its new Vice-President, Research and Development.

When Rossen chose Brock for his Master of Business Economics, the avid hockey fan was hopeful it would help him land a role with a professional hockey organization, but he knew it wasn’t a given.

“I tried to soak up as much knowledge as I could from my time at Brock so that I could be best prepared to hit the ground running and try to achieve my professional goals post-university,” he said. “I can say for sure I wouldn’t be where I am today without the MBE program.”

's Professor of Earth Sciences Mariek Schmidt recently received the honour of having a minor planet, which is an asteroid and other fragment dating back to the birth of the solar system, named after her.

While water breaks have become standard practice in many elite competitive sports, recent graduate Jocelyn Stel (BSc ’26) says there’s one game where keeping players hydrated can be particularly challenging: beach volleyball.

“Beach volleyballers face unique heat-related challenges. They train outdoors in direct sunlight, have limited shade, and compete on very hot sand here and at international competitions,” she says. “Water stations are far from the courts and hydration monitoring is limited, so it wasn’t clear whether players were hydrating effectively. If they aren’t, both their safety and their performance are at risk.”

When Julia Luvizutto began exploring international learning opportunities as an undergraduate student in Brazil, she had no idea how the experience would change the course of her career as an aspiring researcher.

Thanks to the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), Luvizutto was able gain global research experience at .

While on campus as an ELAP participant, Luvizutto sought every opportunity to grow as a researcher and communicator. She audited undergraduate nursing lectures and participated in English as a Subsequent Language programming, Global Scholars activities, research symposia and workshops focused on academic reading, writing and speaking.

For the past 20 years, Kevin Turner Professor at Brock Geography and Tourism Studies, Parks Canada staff and officials from the Northern Yukon community have been tracking how climate change has vastly impacted Canada’s North.

Tundra grasslands are being replaced by shrubs. Permafrost is thawing at an accelerated rate. Lakes are draining more than in the past. River and lake shorelines are eroding more quickly. And fires are burning within and beyond the boreal treeline.

“Northern regions experience amplified responses to climate change, and our data provides important insight regarding how these important landscapes are responding,” says Turner. “The data also serves as a valuable reference when evaluating whether the results of future surveys and samples are similar or if landscape changes are continuing to accelerate.”

Turner’s research is funded by a 2016 and a 2023 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Polar Knowledge Canada, and 's Indigenous Research Grant. Learn more ➡️ https://loom.ly/fBFo4oQ

A vibrant display of hibiscuses takes centre stage at the entrance to , blooming at the heart of Suzanne Rochon-Burnett Circle. The long-established plants are putting on an impressive show this summer, adding a splash of colour to the campus landscape maintained by Brock’s Grounds Services team across more than 162 hectares (400 acres).
