Tout récemment, la Fondation du Cégep John Abbott a célébré cinq personnes exceptionnelles dont les contributions ont laissé une marque durable sur le Cégep et la communauté dans son ensemble.

Choosing a CEGEP is a big decision, and nothing beats seeing a campus in person.

That is why John Abbott College is opening its doors for its Fall Open House on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and everyone is welcome.

Located on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis at the tip of the island, John Abbott College is one of the most scenic educational institutions in Québec.

Whether students are aiming for university or heading straight into a career, there's something to fit every path. Programs range from Science, Social Science, and Arts to career paths like Police Technology, Nursing, and Dental Hygiene. Add in Islanders athletics, dozens of student clubs, and a community of more than 6,500 day-division students and Continuing Education learners, and it's easy to see why so many students call John Abbott home.

During the open house, prospective students and their families can tour the grounds and get real answers about programs, the admission process, and student life.

For those who can't make it in October, a second open house takes place in January.

Choisir un cégep est une décision importante, et rien ne vaut une visite en personne pour découvrir un campus. C’est pourquoi le Cégep John Abbott ouvre ses portes à l’occasion de sa journée portes ouvertes d’automne, le samedi 17 octobre, de midi à 16 h. Tout le monde est le bienvenu!

Situé sur les rives du lac Saint-Louis, à la pointe de l’île, le Cégep John Abbott est l’un des établissements d’enseignement les plus pittoresques du Québec.

Que les étudiants souhaitent poursuivre leurs études à l’université ou se lancer directement dans une carrière, il y a un parcours pour chacun. Les programmes comprennent les Sciences, les Sciences humaines et les Arts, ainsi que des programmes menant directement à une carrière, comme les Techniques policières, les Soins infirmiers et l’Hygiène dentaire. À cela s’ajoutent les équipes sportives des Islanders, des dizaines de clubs étudiants et une communauté de plus de 6 500 étudiants de la formation régulière et de la Formation continue. Il est facile de comprendre pourquoi tant d’étudiants considèrent le Cégep John Abbott comme leur chez-soi.

Lors de la journée portes ouvertes, les futurs étudiants et leurs familles pourront visiter le campus et obtenir des réponses concrètes à leurs questions sur les programmes, le processus d’admission et la vie étudiante.

Pour ceux qui ne peuvent pas se joindre à nous en octobre, une deuxième journée portes ouvertes aura lieu en janvier.

John Abbott College and its partners welcomed Phyllis Webstad for a special keynote address leading up to Orange Shirt Day.

The event was held Monday in partnership with Macdonald Campus of McGill University’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (the school board for Nunavik).

Webstad, co-founder and CEO of the Orange Shirt Society, shared her personal story of attending the St. Joseph Mission residential school at the age of six, where her new orange shirt was taken from her. Her experience became the foundation for Orange Shirt Day and its message: every child matters.

Throughout her presentation, Webstad spoke about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools, sharing stories about her mother and grandmother and how those experiences continue to affect families today. She also spoke about the work of the Orange Shirt Society, the importance of supporting survivors and the ongoing work to uncover and preserve the truth of what happened at residential schools.

The event also featured Kim Tekakwitha Martin, John Abbott College’s Dean of Indigenous Education, who spoke about Indigenous education and the importance of creating spaces where Indigenous students and employees feel welcomed, respected and supported.

Martin became Abbott’s first Dean of Indigenous Education in 2023, establishing the first position of its kind in the CEGEP network. The role reflects the College’s commitment to strengthening Indigenous education, student support and relationships with Indigenous communities. Martin provides leadership for Indigenous education initiatives across the College, including its daytime programs and programs for John Abbott College - Centre for Continuing Education

This includes partnerships with the Cree School Board and Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, the Crossroads transition program for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, and the Indigenous Studies Certificate. The College is also working with Indigenous partners on culturally responsive approaches to education, including a current project to develop a toolkit for Indigenous students transitioning into post-secondary classrooms.

The College's commitment is reinforced by its signing of the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Indigenous Education Protocol, which provides a framework for colleges and institutes to advance Indigenous education and reconciliation.

☀️ What a beautiful day for the 25th Annual Pow Wow, proudly hosted through a longstanding partnership between McGill University and John Abbott College!

With sunshine, a fresh breeze, and an incredible community spirit, students and participants of all ages joined Indigenous communities, performers, artists, and vendors to celebrate traditions through music, dance, song, vibrant regalia, and culture. The energy of the drums, the colours, and the welcoming atmosphere made for a truly magical day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to celebrating this beautiful tradition again next year!

☀️ Quelle magnifique journée pour la 25e édition annuelle du Pow-Wow, fièrement organisée dans le cadre d’un partenariat de longue date entre l’Université McGill et le Cégep John Abbott!

Sous un soleil radieux, bercés par une douce brise et portés par un formidable esprit de communauté, des personnes de tous âges se sont réunies aux côtés des communautés autochtones, des artistes, des danseurs et danseuses, ainsi que des exposants pour célébrer les traditions à travers la musique, la danse, le chant, les regalia colorés et la richesse des cultures autochtones. L’énergie des tambours, l’éclat des couleurs et l’atmosphère chaleureuse ont fait de cette journée un moment tout simplement magique.

Merci à toutes les personnes qui se sont jointes à nous. Nous avons déjà hâte de célébrer à nouveau cette belle tradition l’an prochain!

Set in rural 1926 Newfoundland, David French's iconic play Salt-Water Moon is a tender, romantic story about love, loss, pride and forgiveness. Jacob Mercer returns home to win back the heart of his former sweetheart, Mary Snow, and the two begin a poetic sparring match that leaves the audience wanting more. Weaving humour and heartache throughout, this story takes us on a wonderful journey set under a starry moonlit night.
