The Farm Management and Technology (FMT) Program is a 3-year college-level program (DEC) offered at McGill University's Macdonald Campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. This program leads to a Diploma of Collegial Studies (Diplome d'études collégiales) (www.mcgill.ca/fmt). The Agri-Tour also brought our year 3s to Les Fromagiers de la Table Ronde in Sainte-Sophie, Quebec, where Frederick Alary FMT'00 introduced them to his family's enterprise. The Alarys have farmed since 1922, and at the beginning of the 2000s faced the challenge of ten family members wanting to come back to the dairy farm. They came up with a way to add value to their operation by producing their own artisanal farmstead cheeses exclusively made from the milk of their herd and selling them in their farm store. We tried them, highly recommend! 😊🧀

Perfect timing to visit Canneberges Bieler in the harvest season, so the students could see how one of the largest cranberry producers in Quebec harvests their fruit. VP of Operations Simon Bonin gave the group a run down of the production and the market and brought them to the fields to see how the harvest works.

This year, we are trying something new for our year 3's class trip: we are staying in Quebec this time to shorten the previously long hours on the bus. First stop are Les Fermes Desrosiers in Mirabel, where three generations work together and produce high-quality beef and maple products. Benoit Desrosiers gave the group a tour through their facilities.

Sometimes it takes a village! Last week our awesome year 2s stepped up and helped getting a big part of the onion, apple, and pepper harvest in at the horticulture center. What an awesome bunch! 🙌🏼🤩

Participants needed! A McGill PhD study in the Department of Bioresource Engineering is seeking participants in a study about cover crops. It involves modelling nitrogen dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions from fields where cover cropping is being used. Part of this work, in turn, consists in simulating various cover cropping management scenarios into the future, to see how productivity and nitrogen cycling might be affected by climate change.

Professor Madramootoo took the year 3s in Conservation of Soil and Water on a field trip to Ormstown to observe drainage installations on the Bryson Farm. The students were able to see a trenchless drain laying plow in operation and the various types of equipment being used during pipe installations. We also observed different type sof pipe materials and geosynthetic filters wrapped around the pipes.

Last week, our Beef and Sheep Management students met with Brian Maloney at Ferme Brylee / Brylee Farm , a 5th generation family farm producing grass-fed beef and sheep. Brian took the group on a tour around his farm to see the animals and the operation's rotational grazing system, which is designed with sustainability and profitability in mind.
