October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer awareness is more than just wearing a pink ribbon. Breast cancer awareness month is focused around bringing to light the importance of breast cancer and to educate people about breast cancer risks. It is to also encourage people to go for regular breast cancer screening before the age of 40. This month alone about 2,600 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Did you know, that even though breast cancer is more common in women, it can affect men too and each year around 3,000 men get diagnosed with breast cancer. Fun fact: This week is actually known as Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week from October 17-23.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day.
This year the World Health Organization’s theme is mental health in humanitarian emergencies. Individuals impacted by crises such as natural disasters and conflicts face emotional distress with 1 in 5 people experiencing a mental health condition. By checking in on people’s mental health, we give them the strength to cope through adversity and help rebuild communities. This ensures that the most vulnerable have access to supports in the face of adversity. As public health practitioners it is our responsibility to help our communities achieve better mental health care.

“There is no health without mental health”
