St. Petro Mohyla Institute

St. Petro Mohyla Institute Mohyla Institute is a post-secondary student residence located just off of the University of Saskatchewan campus. Petro Mohyla. Both sexes would be accepted.

The institute was founded in 1916, and named after the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan, St. Later the institute moved from its original location on Main Street to its current address at 1240 Temperance Street in the 1960s. During the first decade of the last century, after attending to their basic needs, recent immigrants from Ukraine turned their attention to the education of their children. At t

hat time, a number of teachers and students of Ukrainian origin formed a student society. They were very concerned about the economic and cultural well-being of their fellow Ukrainian-Canadians. They had decided to establish a Ukrainian based institution in Saskatoon. In 1916, a fundraising campaign for the establishment of such a facility was launched. The campaign was highly successful and in June, 1916, a call for students went out. These students would attend public schools, secondary schools, Normal Schools (teachers' college) and university. The institute would offer Ukrainian language, history and literature classes. An underlying principle of the institution was 'To be a good Canadian citizen, it was desirable to maintain one's origin and national culture'. Later that year the institute was opened and named in honour of Petro Mohyla, an outstanding educationalist and dignitary of the Orthodox Church in Kiev. It was housed in rented premises. There were 35 students in this non-sectarian institution. In 1917, the St. Petro Mohyla Institute was incorporated. That year, the number of students increased to 70. The next major decision was to purchase and remodel a suitable building to house the institute. A building was obtained and served as the institute to the end of 1964. During these years, the mix of students shifted gradually from a predominance of public and high school to the present situation where virtually all are pursuing university or other post-secondary education.

Today, the Vyshyvanka is far more than a marker of identity — it has become a global symbol of strength, resilience, and solidarity 💙💛

Vyshyvanka Day is an opportunity for Ukrainians around the world to reflect on the history embodied in the embroidered shirt and to proudly say: we remain united, connected to our country and to one another.

By wearing a Vyshyvanka, we honour our traditions, celebrate the richness of Ukrainian culture, and weave our own stories into the shared story of Ukraine wherever you are.

As the academic year comes to an end, it’s time to say goodbye to our residents 💛

This year wasn’t just about living in the same place — it was about building friendships that went beyond the residence. Many of you found new friends, supported each other, and created meaningful connections both inside and outside our community.
Some of you are moving on to new chapters, while others will be back next year — but each of you has left your mark here.

Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and all the moments we shared ✨

We wish you all the best in what comes next!

We were delighted to bring together different generations of the Mohyla community to celebrate our 110th anniversary!

The evening was filled with warmth and connection. In the best Ukrainian traditions, we shared songs and created a joyful atmosphere that reminded us of the strength and beauty of our culture. We were especially proud of our two students, who performed on the bandura together with their teacher, Oksana Hushliak. It was truly inspiring to see what they have accomplished in just one year.

We also had the pleasure of recognizing and celebrating our graduating residents, marking an important milestone in their journey and wishing them continued success in all that lies ahead.
It was a wonderful evening filled with meaningful moments, memories, laughter, and a strong sense of community.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us in making this celebration so special.
