Congratulations to Professor Barbara von Tigerstrom, who is one of five USask scholars receiving the lifetime honorary title of distinguished professor. It celebrates lifetime achievement in research, scholarly, and artistic work.

von Tigerstrom is one of Canada’s most influential scholars in health law, privacy law, and the regulation of biomedical technologies. Her research has shaped legal scholarship, public policy, and regulatory practice nationally and internationally. Further to this, she has received five institutional teaching awards and national recognition from the Canadian Association of Law Teachers.

“As a Distinguished Professor, Dr. von Tigerstrom would represent the best of what we as a university have to offer. She is humble and hard-working, and she brings to USask both profound academic depth and true heft,” Dean Martin Phillipson wrote in von Tigerstrom’s nomination letter.

While von Tigerstrom is happy that her recognition is shining a spotlight on the College of Law, she was a reluctant nominee. “This particular designation is intended to recognize effort and achievement across the whole spectrum of the job, including both teaching and research. To me, both have always been really important, so I like the idea of the university honouring faculty for this,” von Tigerstrom said. “But I feel uncomfortable being singled out when so many people are doing great work.”

Faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the legal community gathered Wednesday evening for the annual USask Law Appreciation Dinner to celebrate the people who make the college what it is — and to recognize Dean Martin Phillipson as he prepares to conclude his 10-year term this June.

In his remarks, Phillipson reflected on the relationships that have defined his time as dean: “The greatest thing about this job for me has been the people and the sense of community. We have a wonderful community at the college, and you can see it here tonight. It's been a remarkable privilege to be dean of such a fabulous law school.”

It was a warm and memorable evening, with colleagues and long-time friends coming together to reconnect and appreciate one another.

We had a wonderful event in Regina, where approximately 175 people turned out, including USask Law alumni, retired judiciary, members of the Regina bar, and community members.

The highlight was an engaging speech from Ralph Goodale (LLB’72), former Regina MP and cabinet minister and newly minted member of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Advisory Committee on Canada-US Economic Relations. Mr. Goodale provided a realistic assessment of global affairs and reinforced the importance of a strong relationship between Canada and the US, even while Canada continues to advance its standing on the world stage.

Dean Martin Phillipson updated everyone on recent happenings at the college, spotlighting the successes of our students and grads. The sense of unity and USask Law pride in the room was gratifying and we are already looking forward to a return trip to Regina!

This event was the John A. Stack Memorial Lecture, presented by the McKercher LLP Lecture Series. We are grateful to the Stack family and McKercher LLP for their support.

Ralph Goodale (LLB’72) will join USask Law in Regina on May 14 at an event featuring his talk, “Canada in a dangerous and divided world.”

As a former federal cabinet minister, recently retired High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and a newly appointed member of the Canada-U.S. economic advisory council, Goodale will offer perspective on the forces reshaping global and domestic affairs.

This event is open to USask Law alumni and members of the Regina bar. Cocktails and dinner will be served, with program to follow.
