Today marks Lesia Ukrainka’s 155th birthday. A literary and feminist icon, she personified Ukrainian spirit, tenacity, and resilience.

For generations, we have gathered at her feet to celebrate, mourn, learn, and create awareness about Ukraine on this campus.

2026 marks 50 years of Lesia’s presence at the University of Saskatchewan. We honor and celebrate this gifted and multifaceted writer today and every day.

Today, we mark four years since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion into Ukraine. The resistance and resilience shown since that fateful day continue to awe and inspire the world, despite russia's best efforts to distort truth and reality.

As geopolitical interests and alliances continue to shift, uncertainty and worry remain high. In recent weeks, even the memory of those lost in this war has been branded "political propaganda." How heartbreaking it is that the simple images of fallen friends worn on an Olympian's helmet could incite such a lack of basic compassion and humanity. Today, we think of those, who despite the most difficult of circumstances, continue to show such moral fortitude and conviction for simply telling the truth.

We also think of the millions of regular Ukrainians who, plunged into darkness and cold these last many months, continue to try to live as normally as possible. As resilience fatigue sets in, four long years, which are truly twelve long years, are indeed too long. All Ukrainians have ever wanted is a just and lasting peace and the freedom to live on their land as they choose.

And finally, we think of those who have been lost - soldiers, innocent civilians, and the over 20,000 stolen children. The human scale of this war is beyond measure, truly unimaginable, and is so often lost in whatever headlines remain about this war. We honour them today - may their memory be eternal. Вічна Їм пам'ять.

We continue to stand resolutely with Ukraine - today, tomorrow, for as long as it takes. Without them, without their courage, dignity, and willingness to keep fighting for democracy, our world would be a much darker place.

Слава Україні!

Our participation in last week’s conference of the Ukrainian Heritage Consortium of North America, in particular the conference visits to the Gabriel Dumont Institute and Wanuskewin, reminded us of just how many connections our communities share. We honor this shared history today, as we stand in remembrance of the pain Indigenous communities endured in their own land, and in commitment to exploring these truths in the study of our own heritage in Canada.

Today, we honour survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities, and remember the children who never came home.

We are committed to exploring, through our exhibitions and programming, the historic and contemporary relationships between Ukrainian settler and Indigenous communities. Working together in collaboration and partnership, we can learn from our past and strive for a more inclusive and equitable future.
