Still not enough: University of Saskatchewan educator's pursuit of equity

Paul Bazin Webster (MEd’12, EdD’24) watched the Kanesatake Resistance unfold on the news, and it became a foundational experience for him.

“I'm not satisfied with, at any moment, the idea of inequity and disparity in social, educational, and health realities for people based off of who they are foundationally as Indigenous or non-Indigenous [people],” he said.

Exploring literacies-in-context through a professional learning symposium

The Prairies Literacies Project hosted educators from across Saskatchewan for the Following the River symposium on April 17-18.

“The teaching of literacies in relation to place is important as it confronts universal models of instruction and highlights the diversity of prairie literacies education,” Dr. Lori McKee said.

Indigenous Languages Certificate (ILC) - Cree Language stream

The ILC focuses on immersing educators in the three dialects of Cree spoken on the Prairies: nêhiyawêwin (Plains Cree, 'y' dialect), nêhinawêwin (Swampy Cree, 'n' dialect), and nîhithawîwin (Woodland Cree, 'th' dialect). The part-time program includes 10 courses taken over two years.

Through the courses, students develop proficiency in how to speak and teach Cree by learning Indigenous teaching methodologies. The ILC is open to anyone who wishes to learn an Indigenous language, and students enter the program with varied ability to speak Cree, from beginner to fluent speakers.
