Researchers University of Saskatchewan are exploring a new way to tackle disease by adapting a treatment originally designed for cancer. They are using ionizing radiation to break down harmful plaques in the brain—one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s.

The research team members include Prof. Ekaterina (Kate) Dadachova and MSc student Jaiden Jocelyn (pictured at the CLS) with the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan.

Researchers University of Saskatchewan are exploring a new way to tackle disease by adapting a treatment originally designed for cancer. They are using ionizing radiation to break down harmful plaques in the brain—one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s.

The team is testing this method on lab-grown “mini-brains” to see how well it slows or stops plaque formation and how it affects brain structure. Mini-brains, or brain organoids, are created by growing stem cells in a dish that later organize themselves and eventually behave a bit like real brain tissue. The team used advanced imaging techniques at the CLS to help track these changes in the mini-brains after given this treatment.

With nearly 800,000 people living with in Canada—and most cases linked to Alzheimer’s—new, early-stage treatments are urgently needed. If successful, this innovative work could improve care, reduce costs, and open new opportunities for medical and biotech advancements.
