It's getting colder. We're closing up the garden for the season.
Today's activities included harvesting more asemaa, covering the rest of the asemaa, cleaning up the raspberry beds, cleaning out (almost) all of the beds, putting away lattices and cages, harvesting the rest of the tomatoes and squashes.
It was a chilly one, but still a beautiful day to be out in the garden.

Thank you to Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG), an Anishinaabe post-secondary institute in Sault Ste. Marie, for donating 20 smudge kits to Bluewater Health's Indigenous Navigation Services team! Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig - Shingwauk Teaching Lodge

Each kit includes four sacred medicines — sage, to***co, cedar, and sweetgrass — grown and dried by SKG, along with a smudge pot and educational resources.

These kits have been warmly received by clients, helping support connections to Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices.

Bluewater Health's Indigenous Navigation Services team supports Indigenous patients and families in navigating the hospital system and accessing culturally safe, respectful care.

Fall is here! Our gitigaan has been very generous this year. Now is time to do winter preparation - cleanup, add mulch, etc.
Students are welcome and encouraged to join us.
And we wouldn't turn away community that wants to come help too ;)

SKG staff and a couple of committed community members spent the beautiful afternoon planting 30 cedar trees. Teamwork made the load light, fast and fun. The cedar saplings were given a generous amount of compost/soil, water, some asemaa and love.

As we were finishing we were visited by two eagles flying directly overhead.

It is a great day to be Anishinaabe. Miigwetch Creator

✨ Meet Kayla Musgrove!

Kayla is a member of Batchewana First Nation.

A Registered Practical Nurse for the past eight years, Kayla’s career has been rooted primarily in palliative care, with additional experience in program management and clinical instruction. She brings her nursing background and passion for supporting learners into her role as Coordinator of Health Programs at Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig.

Fun fact: Kayla is a proud girl mom, and says being her daughter’s mom is her favourite job of all.

Offered in partnership with Canadore College, our PSW program provides hands-on learning and prepares students to provide compassionate personal care and support in community and institutional settings.
