The Body is Not an Object: A Public Lecture in Philosophy

The body is material that experiences. The body becomes itself by joining with what it is not, with the world. What is this strange phenomenon and what kind of world and attitudes does it need? CBC News is proud to offer the CBC News Summer Scholarship in memory of Joan Donaldson and Peter Gzowski to aspiring journalists from across the country in 2027. The four-month, in-person program provides valuable hands-on experience in multi-platform news environments.

Applications will be accepted from October 14, 2026 to November 1, 2026.

The scholarship is open to graduating students in their final year of study at any post-secondary institution in Canada. Formal journalism education is not required, but candidates will need to demonstrate journalism skills and experience (for example, working at a campus news organization). The Arts Society is pleased to announce its third annual Art Show in HSS, to be held on October 15th and 16th (Thursday and Friday). Visual works will be on display in the Nexus Centre on both days, and on Friday there will be an evening of performances at Suncor Hall in the School of Music. Previous years have featured musical performances of jazz, pop, and classical, as well as readings of poetry, short fiction, drama, and comedy. Visual art displayed has included photography, drawing, and painting of all forms and genres.

The Arts Society is a group of faculty and staff at Memorial who meet regularly to share their artistic practices and interests. We meet monthly for informal drop-in discussions, present a show each year of artistic work being produced at MUN, and generally foster and promote artistic events connected to the university community.

Are you planning to apply for a Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s through SSHRC? Join Drs. Danine Farquarson and Meghan Burchell for an interactive workshop designed to help you prepare a strong and competitive application.

Who should attend? Current and incoming MA students in Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines who are planning to apply for a CGS-M award. Applications are due December 1, 2026.

The CGRS D program provides $27,000 over 12 months to support outstanding Master’s students pursuing research in the social sciences and humanities.
During this workshop, you will:
· Learn about the program and eligibility requirements.
· Receive guidance on preparing a research proposal and application.
· Gain practical tips for strengthening your application package.
· Have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the application process.

Congratulations to author Anne Carson on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2016, Carson visited Memorial to deliver the annual E.J. Pratt Lecture. Her lecture, "On the History of Skywriting," appears in The E.J. Pratt Lectures 1968 — 2025, edited by Andrew Loman (Memorial University Press).

FROM THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Anne Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada. In 1981, she published her doctoral thesis in Classics entitled ‘Odi et Amo Ergo Sum’, and has, throughout her entire career, combined poetry writing with translation work and teaching at various universities. Almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning. She has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her work. Her translations from Classical Greek may be regarded as independent works in their own right. Among these is her interpretation of Sappho’s poem fragments, ‘If Not, Winter’ (2002), along with tragedies such as Sophocles’s ‘Electra’ (2001) and ‘Antigone’ (2015) and Euripides’s ‘Bakkhai’ (2015).

A timely work of literary travel, The Waking Glacier: A High Arctic Lyric embarks on an Arctic sea voyage as a dawning, existential immersion in the larger-than-human world. Bringing episodic memory and ecopoetic inquiry to polar exploration, Dianne Chisholm rediscovers her q***r, formative engagement with the ice. This is not a chronicle of heroic adventuring but a crystallizing sensorium, synthesizing expedition log, revisionary history, uncanny remembrance, and inventive prosody. Punctuated by her atmospheric photographs, Chisholm's lyric offers a powerful meditation on perception, loss, and the role of art in witnessing climate change. The Waking Glacier: A High Arctic Lyric will resonate with readers of Juliana Spahr, Rebecca Solnit, Robert Macfarlane and Ellen Meloy, as well as scholars in environmental humanities and decolonial studies.

Dianne Chisholm is a writer, photographer, alpinist, Arctic traveler, and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Alberta. Her travel writing and photography appear in Guide to Greenland, Up Here Magazine, Alberta Views, Wagadu, Rhizomes, and other venues. When not at her desk in amiskwacîywâskahikan (Edmonton, Treaty 6 territory), she's at home in the Rocky Mountains or abroad in Nordic ice lands.
