Indigenous Student Resource Centre - Memorial University Indigenous Student Resource Centre
Formerly the ARO ISRC strives to offer programs and services to create a welcoming community for all Indigenous students.

The Indigenous Student Resource Centre (ISRC) is responsible for providing support services to Indigenous students. The centre also works to advocate and educate the general university population regarding inclusion of our unique Indigenous peoples found within our province. With assistance from the Indigenous Student Success Coordinator, the ISRC is entrusted to assist Indigenous students in adapting to an academic and urban environment. ISRC also provides information to potential students on accessing funding through a wide variety of Indigenous groups, scholarships and other potential sources of funding. Indigenous students have access to a student lounge, six computers, photocopier, telephone for local calls, used textbooks and other resources. The common student area is a place for students to relax in a peaceful environment with other Indigenous students who share similar backgrounds.

It is with profound sadness we share the news of Elder Emma Reelis' passing. She was an important part of the ISRC and the community at large. We are here if any Indigenous students need support.

Our community is grieving the passing of Elder Emma Reelis. She meant so much to so many, and her loss is felt deeply across our First Light family. The relationships she built, the moments people shared with her, and the place she holds in our hearts will remain with us.

We hold her family and loved ones close, and we hold each of you who is hurting alongside them.

First Light programs will be closed on Tuesday, October 13, to allow time for grief, reflection, and remembrance.

At a later time, we will make space for our community to gather, share memories of Emma, and support one another. We will await word from her family about service arrangements so we can respect their wishes and support them and our community during this difficult time. Further details will follow.

For now, please be gentle with yourselves and one another. We carry our love for Emma together. 🩷

Morning folks, unfortunately the network is out all over campus so we're not able to get the event poster up, but we will be having our beading circle tomorrow 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., so Indigenous students please come on out! Supplies are provided and no previous experience is required or expected. I'll be there to teach two needle beading to anyone who's interested to learn, or if you can already bead just come hang out and make some progress on a project. We're the bungalow in the campus residence parking lot. We've got tea and coffee and Wednesday is mid-week MUNchies so there will be snacks. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Indigenous students, come out and harvest sweetgrass with us on Tuesday, October 6th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

We will meet at the Juniper House Indigenous Resource Centre on 208 Elizabeth Avenue (in the campus residence parking lot) and walk over to the sweetgrass garden at the Faculty of Medicine Indigenous Health Office.

You will learn how to pick sweetgrass respectfully to preserve the life of the plant for future harvests.

Music Mondays are back! Indigenous students, join us for hand drumming every Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting on October 5th.

We have a variety of First Nations and Inuit drums and drum beaters for students to use. No previous drumming experience is required or expected.

Drumming is a foundational part of First Nations and Inuit culture and a great way for students to have fun while learning our songs and making meaningful connections.

You can find us at the Juniper House Indigenous Student Resource Centre at 208 Elizabeth Avenue, in the campus residence parking lot.
