Faculty of Nursing, Memorial University Memorial University's Faculty of Nursing (MUNFON) offers award-winning undergraduate and graduate programs.

Memorial’s Faculty of Nursing (formerly the School of Nursing) attracts individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of people and communities. Starting out in 1966 with an enrolment of 38, the faculty has over 500 students enrolled across undergraduate and graduate programs. Accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, we offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) (Collaborative) with four-year and accelerated options. Graduate programs include a Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) with practicum and nurse practitioner options as well as a post-master’s nurse practitioner graduate diploma, and a doctor of philosophy (PhD) in nursing. Our programs are highly-respected across the country, and our graduates in demand at home and abroad.

From Gander to Canada's North - and now exploring the future of nursing and virtual care.

Born and raised in Gander, Crystal Vaughan has built a nursing career that has taken her from rural acute care in Gander and Carbonear to primary and community health in Labrador, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

A registered nurse, MN and PhD candidate at Memorial University, Crystal is exploring an important question: As health care becomes increasingly virtual, are we making the most of what nurses can do?

Drawing on research in Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, she's examining how nurses contribute to virtual primary care, the challenges they face and how their expertise can be better supported.

It's a conversation about technology, yes. But more importantly, it's about people - and making health care work better for the communities that depend on it.

Kamso Nzewi graduated from Memorial University in May 2026 after completing her nursing degree at the Centre for Nursing Studies. Today, she's a registered nurse working in the emergency department.

Tammy Mayne created this beadwork necklace by hand.

Tammy, a member of Qalipu First Nation with Mi’kmaq family roots in Botwood and St. George’s, is part of our Faculty of Nursing team in Gander. For her, beading has meaning well beyond this particular piece.

“I always like to express myself through art, especially beading. It makes me feel connected to my culture, and in this instance it was both spiritual and healing.”

She created the necklace especially for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“I have heard many stories of the hardships our people faced as well as many First Nations across Canada, which is why the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation exists – to bring awareness to our painful history and current injustices. In particular, the story behind the orange shirt is but one example.”

The orange shirt carries the story of residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, at six years old, the new orange shirt her grandmother had bought her was taken from her when she arrived at St. Joseph Mission Residential School near Williams Lake, B.C. When Phyllis shared her story publicly in 2013, it helped inspire Orange Shirt Day and the message Every Child Matters.

In this piece, bead by bead, Tammy found her own way to carry that message forward.

“Through prayer and a desire to make a difference, no matter how small, it makes me feel empowered. It is my way of bringing awareness and to tell the child who wasn’t allowed to wear her beautiful orange shirt that it was wrong, that we care, and that we will wear our orange shirts with pride because they couldn’t.”

Tammy describes her beaded orange shirt as a symbol “of hurt, of healing, of empowerment.”

And seeing others wearing orange carries meaning for her, too:

“Seeing so many people wearing an orange shirt fills me with hope. It lets me know that people care.”

As we move through Mi’kmaw History Month - this year’s theme is Nepisulti’k - We Are Healing - Tammy’s words are a powerful reminder that truth, reconciliation and healing don’t end on Sept. 30.

This is nursing in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Graduates giving back, students supporting students, and a campus community showing up for one another.

Recent graduate and Class Treasurer Courtney Kelly stopped by with a $250 gift from the Class of 2026 to our student food pantry. Introduced in 2024, the pantry provides grab-and-go food for clinical days, classes and labs, along with items for meals at home.

That same spirit is behind the student-led Nurse the Pantry drive, led by third-year students Erin Saulnier, class representative (left in photo 2), and Hannah Brace, Nursing Society VP for Satellite Sites.

Students also recently laced up for the Hustle for Hospice Fun Run in support of Lionel Kelland Hospice - another example of this community being there where it matters.

A special shout-out to everyone who makes Grand Falls-Windsor such a supportive place to learn, grow and give back!

Fresh off last month's Terry Fox Run, Team MUNFON hits Bowring Park in St. John's tomorrow, Sunday, October 4, for the CIBC Run for the Cure. Student engagement has been incredible and together we've raised over $1,555, more than triple our $500 goal.

A huge congratulations to our own Dr. Ahtisham Younas, recipient of the 2026 Nursing Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN)!

This national distinction recognizes his contributions to nursing science, particularly his work to advance compassionate, person-centred care for underserved populations, including immigrants and refugees, individuals experiencing homelessness, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals.

Through his research, teaching and supervision, Ahtisham is helping prepare nursing students and emerging researchers to ask important questions, challenge inequities and improve health and care in our communities.

Reflecting on the award, Dr. Younas said:

“Receiving this competitive national award is an honour. The recognition is a reflection of the incredible teams, mentors, mentees, and community partners I’ve had the privilege to work with throughout my research career so far. Grateful for the support, and excited to keep driving impactful nursing science forward!”

We're so proud of Ahtisham and grateful to the students, colleagues and community partners who share in this achievement. Congratulations!
