September 3rd marks Merchant Navy Veterans Day in Canada.

Today, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Merchant Mariners who served during the World Wars and the Battle of the Atlantic.

Each fall, the Fisheries and Marine Institute, Memorial University, hosts a special ceremony to commemorate this day and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.

When eight ocean research scholars from the Global South arrived in St. John’s for the first time last October, there was little time to process the cultural shift.

Immersive fieldwork began almost immediately.

Nearly a year later, they describe those ten months as transformative.

The NF-POGO Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceanography is a global training initiative supported by The Nippon Foundation (NF) and the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO).

Marine Institute graduate Shamus Mayo turned a passion for technology, problem-solving and ocean exploration into a career in the global subsea industry.

Today, he's building his career with Subsea7 and proving how hands-on learning, applied research and industry experience can open doors around the world.
