Salmon Habitat Restoration Program An environmental youth program that focuses on protecting and enhancing Surrey's natural environment. Like our page to see what we're up to this year!

https://linkin.bio/sharpsurrey The Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP) is a student-based initiative that promotes watershed stewardship and salmon habitat enhancement in Surrey. For more than 25 years, SHaRP's role in the community has been to protect and improve the quality of Surrey's natural environment. SHaRP is comprised of university and high school students working to promote Surrey's natural areas through habitat enhancement and environmental education opportunities. The students receive career-orientated job experience and training in the environmental field.

💧🐟 Water Quality Wednesday!

Did you know that everyday pollutants like oil, chemicals, and litter can end up in our local creeks? 🌊

These pollutants can harm aquatic life, reduce water quality, and damage ecosystems. Small actions, like properly disposing of waste and keeping storm drains clear of pollutants, can make a big difference! 🌱

Let’s work together to keep our waterways clean and healthy! 💙

💧🐟 Water Quality Wednesday: What is Turbidity?

Ever noticed creek water looking cloudy after heavy rainfall? 🌧️ That’s turbidity!

Turbidity occurs when tiny particles like sediment and dirt become suspended in water. While some is natural, excessive turbidity can reduce water quality and make it harder for salmon and other aquatic life to thrive! 🌿

Monitoring turbidity helps us better understand and protect our local creeks! 💙

🐟🍂 They’re back!! Salmon spawning season has officially begun, and the salmon have arrived!

If you’ve never seen returning salmon up close, this is such an amazing time to visit. Watching them make their way back to spawn is one of the coolest signs that fall is officially here. 🍁

Today, the SHaRP team is checking turbidity, which measures how much suspended sediment is in the water. High turbidity can reduce visibility, affect fish feeding, and impact healthy salmon habitat.

🐟 SHaRP does Salmon Tracks!

Those yellow fish beside storm drains are more than just a symbol. They’re a reminder that water flowing into our storm drains can eventually reach local creeks and streams where salmon and other aquatic life live.

Keeping pollutants, soaps, chemicals, and litter out of storm drains helps protect the habitat waiting on the other side. 💧🌿

This Water Quality Wednesday, we’re recognizing the generations of Indigenous stewardship that have cared for and protected the lands and waters around us.

At Bon Accord Creek, we’re reminded that healthy waterways depend on continued care, respect, and connection to these ecosystems.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we encourage everyone to reflect, learn, and continue caring for the waters we all share. 🧡

🌿 Why don’t we just leave nature alone?

Because in many urban streams, human activity has already changed it.

Culverts can block fish passage, pollution can enter waterways, and invasive plants can impact native habitat.

At SHaRP, our goal isn’t to control nature. It’s to help repair past impacts and give salmon habitat a better chance to recover. 🐟🌊
