For more than 25 years, SHaRP's role in the community has been to protect and improve the quality of Surrey's natural environment. SHaRP is comprised of university and high school students working to promote Surrey

's natural areas through habitat enhancement and environmental education opportunities. The students receive career-orientated job experience and training in the environmental field.

🌊🐟 Water Quality Wednesday at the Nicomekl River!

This week we’re looking at dissolved oxygen, which is the oxygen available in the water for fish and other aquatic life to breathe.

For salmon, dissolved oxygen levels generally need to stay around 6.0 mg/L or higher to support survival, with higher levels better supporting long-term health.

We found 12.0 mg/L, this reading is excellent! That’s a very strong sign for salmon habitat in the Nicomekl River. 💧👏

Happy Fish has officially arrived in Surrey! 🐟💚

We had such a fun evening at the Community Picnic at Dominion Park, connecting with residents, sharing simple ways to protect Surrey’s parks and salmon-bearing streams, and welcoming Happy Fish to the community.

From curious questions to smiling photos, it was amazing seeing everyone excited to pose with Happy Fish and learn more about fish passage, connected waterways, and why these projects matter for salmon.

🌊🐟 Water Quality Wednesday at Charles Richardson Nature Reserve, along the Serpentine River!

This week we’re talking about heat stress and why water temperature is so important for salmon.

Salmon are cold-water fish, meaning they rely on cooler streams to stay healthy. When water gets too warm, salmon use more energy just to survive, and warmer water can also hold less dissolved oxygen, making it harder for fish to breathe, grow, and migrate.

Salmon generally do best around 8–15°C. At Richardson Reserve, we measured 16°C, which is just above that ideal range but still close to healthy conditions.

Protecting streamside plants and shaded riparian areas helps keep creeks cooler and safer for salmon. 🌿💧

🐟 SHaRP returned to Tynehead Hatchery to help with fin clipping again this year!

Fin clipping is an important annual process where hatchery salmon fry are carefully marked before being released. This small mark helps hatchery staff identify them when they return to spawn in 3–4 years, supporting long-term salmon tracking and conservation work.

During the process, the fish are anesthetized and recover immediately before continuing their journey toward release. Every step is handled carefully by trained hatchery staff and volunteers who are dedicated to supporting healthy salmon populations in Surrey. 🌊

🌿 Cub Creek restoration in action!

Since 1996, SHaRP has been helping protect and enhance Surrey’s creeks through hands-on restoration work led by local youth.

At Cub Creek, our team removed invasive plants to make more room for native plants to grow, supporting a healthier streamside habitat for wildlife and salmon. 🐟💚

Projects like this are part of Surrey’s ongoing commitment to caring for local streams, strengthening natural areas, and building greener communities.

🌊🐟 Water Quality Wednesday at Enver Creek!

This week we’re looking at temperature. Cooler creek water is best for salmon, with roughly 8–15°C being a healthy range. Once water gets above 18°C, it can start stressing fish, and 20°C+ becomes a much bigger concern.

At 15.8°C, Enver Creek is slightly warm but still supporting aquatic life! 💧
