June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to shape Canada today.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of truth, reconciliation, and continued learning, while honouring the voices, stories, and resilience of Indigenous communities. ❤️🖤💛🤍

The best way to gain a deeper understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Métis experiences is through their own voices:
• read books by Indigenous authors
• attend events and community gatherings
• watch films or performances
• listen to music by Indigenous artists
• follow First Nations, Inuit and Métis creators on social media

For Colleen, leadership is not about authority, it's about responsibility.

When elders placed an eagle feather in Colleen Spier's hands, they told her, "We saw a great leader in you."
For Colleen, who is Metis-Cree, it was not just a moment of recognition - it was the highest honour she's ever received.

She's carried that promise every day since, leading with empathy, integrity and a commitment to lifting others as she rose through her career. Her journey has been one of resilience, transformation and a relentless drive to change a justice system that has long failed Indigenous people. That journey has led her to two of the most consequential roles in British Columbia's justice landscape. Today, she is a provincial court judge and previously served as the first provincial assistant deputy minister of the Indigenous Justice Secretariat.

We’re always proud of KPU graduates whose success reflects their hard work, leadership and positive contributions to their communities and industries.
