PSYC 2350: Psychopathology
This course invites students to critically examine historical and modern perspectives of psychological disorders. They investigate the complexities of diagnosing and classifying a range of disorders, from anxiety and mood disorders to personality and psychotic disorders. Through engaging lectures, multimedia resources, interactive group discussions, and in-depth case study analyses, students uncover the nuances of how these disorders are classified and understood. Prerequisites: PSYC 1100 and 1200

PSYC 3930: Consumer Psychology
This course explores the intricate interactions between consumer decision-making and the strategies used to influence it from a psychological perspective. Students learn about cutting-edge research methods and discover how cognitive, social, and personal factors shape buying behavior. The course also examines how innovative marketing strategies can sway consumer choices and impact market trends. Students learn through a blend of interactive lectures, hands-on experiential learning exercises, and in-depth case studies. Prerequisites: 45 credits from courses at the 1100 level or higher, including PSYC 2330 and PSYC 2385

PSYC 4650: Psychology of Genocide
Students will apply theories from social and personality psychology to the understanding of the causes, correlates, and consequences of genocide and mass killing. They will think critically about the complex and multi-factorial relationships found in the real world. Students will explore the psychology of different groups of people associated with genocide, including perpetrators, bystanders, rescuers, and survivors. Students will also learn about the extent to which the discipline of psychology itself has been shaped by various episodes of genocide and other mass killing. Prerequisites: 45 credits from courses at the 1100 level or higher, including PSYC 2300, 2330 and one of the following: CRIM 1208, PSYC 2400 or SOCI 2260.

PHIL 2107: Modern Philosophy: Descartes to Kant
Students will study major philosophical texts from the modern period, beginning from the time of Descartes. They will apply methods of philosophical analysis to these texts in the exploration of epistemological, metaphysical, ethical and social-political questions. Prerequisites: 3 credits from courses in PHIL

PHIL 2110: Moral Theory
Students will examine major normative ethical theories. They will study classic works representing the major ethical traditions, including virtue theory, deontology, social contract theory, and utilitarianism. They will examine concepts such as duty, virtue, well-being or happiness, and right action. Students will obtain a critical grasp of these ethical theories and concepts by reading classic works. Prerequisites: 3 credits from courses in PHIL

🦴 What can bones tell us about a person? And what can death tell us about a culture? Explore two fascinating areas of anthropology at KPU:

ANTH 1217: Forensic Anthropology
Students will study the concepts and techniques that forensic anthropologists use to identify human skeletal remains for legal purposes. Techniques for assessing age-at-death, stature, and s*x to learn how to analyze a skeleton to the level of individual identity will be studied. The class will also explore the challenges, both scientific and social, of determining "ancestry" based on biological remains by learning how forensic anthropologists have come to rely on their understanding of population genetics in the context of forensic individualization and human biological variation. Study of how cause and manner of death, and the postmortem interval affect the ability to apply forensic anthropological techniques will be identified.

ANTH 2310: Archaeology of Death
Students will examine concepts, theories, and methods that archaeologists use to analyze the funerary rituals and burial practices of ancient, historical, and recent societies around the world. Students will evaluate survey and mapping methods, visual and spatial analysis, and preservation and restoration techniques at different types of mortuary sites. They will explore social and ideological aspects of mortuary behaviours and how different social groups use these in the construction of memory and identity. Students will consider ethical and legal issues involved in the analysis of human remains and other mortuary materials found in archaeological sites and the importance of understanding cultural perspectives and beliefs, with special attention to Indigenous peoples.

Prerequisites: One of: ANTH 1100, ANTH 1217, or ANTH 1300
