Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) For Students. By Students. The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) represents all students studying at Lakehead University.

We are over 8,000 strong, uniting undergraduate and graduate, full- and part-time, and domestic and international students across Lakehead’s two campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia. LUSU’s mandate is to ensure that all students can pursue academic excellence as well as personal and social growth at Lakehead, free from barriers related to income, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, family status, or ability. Through LUSU, students access a wide variety of services, supports, job and volunteer opportunities, and social life like clubs and events. The student union advocates for students’ interests within Lakehead University and the community, including municipal government. Lakehead students are also represented at provincially and nationally through our membership in the Canadian Federation of Students. If you have additional questions about your student union, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We welcome you to visit us in the LUSU office with questions, comments, concerns, or just to hang out! Starting a club or running one this year? Here’s your Clubs Den executive edition.

To get started, you’ll need three current Lakehead students to serve as president, treasurer and secretary. Check Clubs Den for any additional campus or club requirements.

Your club’s dashboard is where you manage your membership roster, messaging, finances, elections and events.

Every club event or activity goes through Clubs Den, from weekly meetings to major annual events. Plan ahead and remember these minimum timelines:

• Regular meetings and other low-risk activities: 5 business days.
• Special events: 20 days in Thunder Bay or 30 days in Orillia to allow for the appropriate University approvals or additional insurance requirements.
• Outside catering not provided by Conference Services or LUSU: 10 business days for University approval.

Submitting an event does not mean it’s approved. Please wait for confirmation from LUSU, and use the comments on your event submission to share updates or ask questions.

How are we already at reading week? 💙

Since September, we’ve explored the LUSUVERSE, met clubs, connected with health resources, carved pumpkins, heard from mayoral candidates and spent a few nights at The Outpost.

These are some of the moments worth looking back on. What’s been your favourite so far?

Reading week is coming up fast, and we know student life can get stressful. To kick off Thanksgiving weekend early, we handed out some quick cash, but they had to earn it with a little bit of heart. 🤎👀

Let’s make it a habit to tell people we appreciate them! ☺️ Comment below what you are most thankful for heading into your week off…

LUSU Statement on Potential Faculty Strike

October 8, 2026 – Thunder Bay/Orillia/Barrie, ON – A potential strike by the Lakehead University Faculty Association (LUFA) is creating uncertainty for students. With midterms approaching, you deserve clear answers about what this could mean for your education.

LUSU supports collective bargaining and the right to strike. Faculty, librarians, and contract lecturers represented by LUFA are essential to our education and campus community. Therefore, we urge Lakehead’s administration and LUFA to reach a fair negotiated agreement.

University administration has confirmed that if negotiations are unsuccessful they will post a website with FAQs. That site will have ongoing updates and information to students on what they can expect if there is a strike. They have also indicated that Residence, Food Services, Athletics, Student Health and Wellness, and other campus services would remain available.

If disruption occurs, LUSU will use our student representatives’ seats on the Senate to push for accommodations and academic amnesty wherever possible, including protection from attendance and missed assessment penalties. Our advocacy will respect bargaining rights and oppose measures that undermine strike action.

We will share confirmed updates, bring your concerns forward, and address longer-term academic measures if disruption continues.

Your students’ union is here to advocate for you.

In solidarity,

Your LUSU Team

Yesterday, LUSU hosted the Thunder Bay Mayoral Candidates Forum, drawing a huge turnout of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members!

The forum covered several important issues facing our city, including housing, public transit, Indigenous reconciliation, the toxic drug crisis, municipal priorities, and the future of Thunder Bay for young people.

A big thank you to all the candidates for participating, Cody Fraser for moderating, everyone who attended, and our LUSU team for their hard work in making this event possible!

Events like this bring our campus and the wider Thunder Bay community together, creating opportunities for meaningful discussions on issues that affect us all
