Meet Dr. Brittany Pennock, a Lakehead Kinesiology alumna who has taken her undergraduate education all the way to a career in medicine!

Brittany is currently a fourth-year Pediatric Resident at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM U).

Reflecting on her time at Lakehead, Brittany shares how her Kinesiology degree provided the foundation for pursuing medicine, while offering opportunities to explore career options and personalize her learning experience.

Her story is a great example of how a Kinesiology degree can open doors to a variety of career paths.

The School of Kinesiology congratulates Liam Puskas on successfully defending the MSc thesis entitled “The Impact of Ammonia Inhalants on Neuromuscular Function During Fatigued Isometric Contractions” on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

His thesis has also successfully passed external review conducted by Dr. Nicholas Ravanelli.

Liam was supervised by Dr. Taryn Klarner and Dr. Ian Newhouse.

Liam is currently beginning his journey in medical school at NOSM in Thunder Bay. In the long term, Liam wants to take some of the lessons he learned throughout his research to contribute to innovation in healthcare in Northern Ontario.

We wish Liam well in all his future endeavours!

The School of Kinesiology congratulates Tyson Mayer on successfully defending the MSc thesis entitled: “Influence of Menthol Nasal Inhalation on Self-Paced Cycling Time-Trial Performance, Perceptual and Physiological Responses in Active Adult Males and Females” on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Tyson’s thesis has also successfully passed external review conducted by Dr. Michel Johnson.

He was supervised by Dr. Derek Kivi.

Tyson is next pursuing the education program at Lakehead University, with plans to eventually complete his PhD.

The School of Kinesiology congratulates Ashley Wright on successfully defending the MSc thesis entitled “The Effects of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy on Osteoporotic Changes in a Pre-clinical Model” on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Her thesis has also successfully passed external review conducted by Dr. Jane Lawrence Dewar.

Ashley was supervised by Dr. Paolo Sanzo.

Ashley is currently studying diagnostic cardiac sonography at McMasterU/Mohawk College and plans to use her masters degree for teaching and research.

The School of Kinesiology congratulates Brianna Miller on successfully defending the MSc thesis entitled “Bridging Gaps in Mental Health Crisis Care: A RE-AIM Evaluation of the Superior North Specialized Treatment and Alternative Response (STAR) Team in Northwestern Ontario” on Monday, September 14, 2026.

The thesis has also successfully passed external review conducted by Dr. Alison Thompson.

Brianna was supervised by Dr. Kathryn Sinden.

Brianna’s plan is to take the next year off, move back home to New Brunswick, and spend some time with family before starting her next chapter. She’s considering nursing and eventually a NP, but is also thinking about pursuing her PhD.

We wish Brianna well in all her future endeavours!

First-year MSc student Patrick Marcotte (supervisor: Dr. Erin Pearson), was accepted to present his 4220 honours thesis at the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH) conference. He will travel to Mérida, México in October!

This month, Lakehead Kinesiology students travelled to Costa Rica with VIDA Volunteer, serving the communities of La Cruz and Nicoya.

Working alongside local healthcare professionals, students gained hands-on experience while contributing to medical outreach initiatives. Experiences like these showcase the power of experiential learning and the impact our students can make around the world.
