ISSC (formally ACSS) has been a part of Lakehead University since 1987. At the Thunder Bay campus,ISS provides a culturally supportive environment to all Indigenous students including Status, Non-Status, Inuit, and Metis. ISS helps Indigenous students to achieve success in their academic goals through a variety of support services. Every year we adapt our support services to provide academic, indi

vidual, and cultural services that are based on student's needs. These services include administrative, personal, transitional supports, and orientation. ISS offers a continual welcome to all students, staff, and faculty who wish to learn more about Indigenous culture, traditions, and teachings. The Thunder Bay campus has an Indigenous student lounge, which is a hub for student activities throughout the year. It provides academic tutoring, study sessions, and much more. The Gakina Nindinawemaaganag lounge offers and open and comfortable environment where students can access a study area, kitchenette, and computer lab. In addition, we have a cultural room for individual or group sessions with our Elder In Residence Program. The lounge is a home away from home for Indigenous students who are pursuing their dream of post-secondary education.

Are you a Métis student pursuing law-related studies or training? Apply for the MNO Justice & Legal Education Bursary Program! This program is designed to reduce financial barriers and support Métis learners pursuing legal education and legal service professions, creating more pathways for Métis voices into Canada’s legal system.

This program is funded by a grant from The Law Foundation of Ontario’s Access to Justice Fund, as part of its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation and access to justice education for Indigenous students across Canada.

Guided Plant Harvesting Walk
Join the Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario on Friday August 21st from 2 to 4pm for an afternoon of plant harvesting on the land, tea making, and sharing traditional foods! Participants will meet at Lakehead University in the Gakina Nindinawemaaganag Lounge (ISSC Student Lounge) Room UC1007. From there will we take a walk on the LU campus to harvest plants together. Afterwards, we will return to the student lounge to make tea, learn about harvesting plants in the Thunder Bay area, and eat traditional foods. This event is for Indigenous young people ages 16 + and will be facilitated by Shelby Gagnon, Indigenous Food Sovereignty Coordinator at the Food Action Network, and Helen Hill, traditional medicine Knowledge Holder.

Join the Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario on Friday August 21st from 2 to 4pm for an afternoon of plant harvesting on the land, tea making, and sharing traditional foods!
