🎓 Convocation Spotlight: Parth Shah

What started as attending the LMPSU Annual Conference for the free food turned into a defining moment for Parth Shah’s undergraduate journey.

After seeing the way professors and students engaged with one another, Parth realized the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) Specialist program was the kind of academic community where he could truly thrive.

Over the past three years, Parth found not only a passion for scientific discovery, but also a strong network of peers, mentors and friends who supported each other through every challenge.

A defining experience for Parth was conducting research in Dr. Dana Philpott’s lab, where he studied NOD2 and metabolic function. Through the realities of troubleshooting experiments and problem-solving in the lab, he gained a deeper understanding of what research truly looks like and developed the critical thinking skills that now shape how he approaches science.

“LMP taught me to think critically, ask ‘why,’ analyze experimental design, and interpret data beyond surface-level conclusions.”

After graduation, Parth hopes to attend medical school while continuing to stay involved in research.

Congratulations, Parth! 🎉

🎓 Convocation Spotlight: Huidan Zuo

For Huidan Zuo, the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) Specialist program became much more than an academic experience; it became a community that challenged and inspired her to grow.

After first discovering LMP through the LMPSU Annual Conference, Huidan was drawn to the program’s close-knit environment, supportive faculty, and strong focus on scientific inquiry. While initially intimidated by the program’s high expectations, she soon found herself pushed beyond her comfort zone in the best possible way.

Through coursework, research, and mentorship, Huidan learned how to critically evaluate scientific literature, question assumptions, and apply ideas independently, skills she plans to carry forward into her future career.

Some of her favourite memories came from third year, when daily routines of classes, lunches, and studying together helped turn classmates into lifelong friends.

Following convocation, Huidan plans to pursue a professional master’s degree in the United States before exploring future paths in medicine or a PhD.

“Take time to enjoy the experience, build meaningful friendships, and make the most of everything beyond academics.”

Congratulations, Huidan! 🎉

🎓 Convocation Spotlight: Rahim Kassam-Suleman

Rahim Kassam-Suleman didn’t originally know exactly where his undergraduate journey would lead — but finding the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) Specialist program helped shape the path forward.

After meeting upper-year LMP students through Science Rendezvous, Rahim was inspired not only by the program itself, but by the people within it.

During his time in LMP, Rahim learned how to think critically, approach complex scientific problems and grow beyond the classroom. His involvement with Science Rendezvous, from Logistics Executive to Co-Head, became one of the defining experiences of his undergraduate career, helping him develop leadership skills and confidence.

For Rahim, one of the most memorable moments was celebrating with nearly the entire cohort after their final third-year LMP exam, a reflection of the strong community built throughout the program.

“LMP taught me that it’s not just about knowledge, but about how to learn, apply and think critically.”

After graduating this June, Rahim plans to take a gap year to gain clinical experience before continuing his academic journey.

Congratulations, Rahim! 🎉

🎓 Convocation Spotlight: Catherine Wang

For Catherine Wang, one of the most meaningful parts of her undergraduate journey was finding community.

After beginning university in a Neuroscience and Cell & Molecular Biology double major, Catherine was drawn to the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) Specialist program because of its small, close-knit cohort and collaborative environment.

Through LMP, Catherine developed the skills to critically engage with scientific research while building lasting connections through the LMPSU annual conference, student socials and leadership initiatives.

This year, Catherine was also recognized with the U of T Student Leadership Award for her community-focused leadership and commitment to supporting fellow students.

One course that left a lasting impression was LMP330, where late-night studying and shared challenges brought the cohort even closer together.

After convocation, Catherine will continue competing with the University College Dragon Boat Club before heading to New York to pursue a Master’s in Human Nutrition at Columbia University.

“Don’t stress too much about your GPA — focus on the relationships, experiences, and perspectives you gain along the way.”

Congratulations, Catherine! 🎉

🎓 Convocation Spotlight: Logan MacDonald

As the Class of 2026 prepares to cross the convocation stage, Logan MacDonald is reflecting on a journey defined by scientific curiosity, leadership and community.

Originally from a small town in Nova Scotia, Logan came to the University of Toronto looking for a program that combined analytical thinking with real-world impact. In the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) Specialist program, he found exactly that.

A defining part of Logan’s undergraduate experience was conducting breast cancer research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre under Dr. Susan Done, where he investigated molecular alterations in disease and gained experience leading independent projects and presenting research findings.

Outside the lab, Logan helped strengthen the LMP community through mentorship, student outreach and his role as Internal Affairs Liaison for the LMPSU.

“LMP taught me to think like a scientist — working backwards to understand disease at the molecular level and valuing independent inquiry.”

After graduation, Logan hopes to pursue medicine and continue applying translational thinking to clinical challenges.

Congratulations, Logan!

For Catherine Wang, leadership is about creating spaces where people feel connected and supported.

A recipient of the University of Toronto Student Leadership Award, Catherine has built community across multiple student groups throughout her time at U of T. From serving as a residence don and student council leader at New College to representing students through the LMP Student Union and organizing events with the Nutritional Sciences Student Association and UC Dragon Boat Club, she has consistently focused on helping students feel like they belong.

Originally drawn to the close-knit community within the Specialist Program in Pathobiology, Catherine says many of her experiences have centred on building meaningful connections. “To me, student life becomes more meaningful when people feel like they belong,” she says.

Congratulations, Catherine, on this well-deserved recognition and for the positive impact you’ve made across the U of T community.

The LMP Research Conference 2026 brought the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology community together for a full day of discovery, collaboration, and innovation.

Held at the Arcadian Court, this year’s conference showcased the depth and impact of research across LMP, from graduate and postgraduate posters to oral presentations, workshops, and the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

A highlight of the day was the keynote by Dr. Laurent Bozec, Disruptive by Design: The Power of Interdisciplinary Science, challenging researchers to lead with curiosity beyond traditional boundaries.

LMPRC continues to highlight the strength of interdisciplinary collaboration and the translational impact of LMP research, from fundamental science to patient care.

A special thank you to the LMPRC 2026 Organizing Committee for delivering such a dynamic and impactful event.
