Graham Library at Trinity College is part of the University of Toronto library system and open to all members of the University. Its roots go back to 1828, and today it occupies a heritage building renewed for the 21st century.

Did you know that Seeley Hall was first designed to be a library?

In 1925, Trinity College moved from Queen Street to a new building at 6 Hoskin Avenue on the U of T campus. The library was intended to be in what is now Seeley Hall, but the space was needed for a chapel, so the library was located on the first floor, with stacks in the basement. Though Seeley Hall never became a library, one can see its bookish glory each year at the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

This summer, the ramp was resurfaced and we’re currently awaiting the installation of a second set of railings to improve accessibility. In the meantime, for users who are unable to access the library easily while the ramp is unavailable, we would be happy to provide retrieval assistance if you require materials from this library. Did you know that the Graham Library has the earliest books to be given to UofT?

In a sense, the Trinity Library is older than both Trinity College and the University of Toronto. The library's story begins in 1827 when John Strachan, the first Bishop of Toronto, wrote to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) requesting assistance in creating a divinity library for the university he was founding in Upper Canada. The Society agreed, and the books were presented to the University of King’s College in 1828. When Kings College became the non-sectarian University of Toronto, Strachan founded the Anglican University of Trinity College in 1851. In keeping with the SPCK agreement, U of T Senate authorized the transfer of the theological SPCK collection to Trinity College. The SPCK books span a range of theological disciplines and were part of the library’s working collection for years before being incorporated into the rare book collection. Bishop Strachan also made two personal gifts to the library. Strachan’s collection reflects his interest in a broad liberal education, with texts in science, classics, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, and theology.
