Veronica Cho, Global Mental Health Action Network
Holly Harris, PhD student, York University

Talk Abstract:
Mad movements have emerged globally as powerful forms of collective resistance, knowledge production, and community-based care that challenge dominant psychiatric paradigms and reimagine responses to mental distress. Drawing on findings from my international research and collaborations across multiple WHO regions, this talk explores how lived experience leadership has shaped the development of Mad movements across diverse cultural and political contexts. Particular attention will be given to how community-based alternatives, peer-led initiatives, and rights-based frameworks are reshaping the future of mental health systems. The presentation will also reflect on the role of Mad Studies as an interdisciplinary field that bridges scholarship, activism, and policy, offering new pathways toward culturally safe, community-driven, and socially just approaches to mental health and wellbeing.

Gather to honour the life of Regis Korchinski-Paquet on her anniversary death and demand truth, accountability, and justice.

Six years after her death during a police interaction in Toronto, a coroner’s inquest has finally been called. This public process will examine the circumstances of her death and can lead to recommendations to prevent future harm.

This press conference is a call to:
• Center the voices of Regis’ family and community
• Demand transparency and accountability
• Push for systemic change in public safety and crisis response

Regis was a 29-year-old Canadian Afro-Indigenous woman whose death sparked protests and ongoing calls for justice across Canada. Her story continues to highlight the urgent need for safer, community-based responses. The upcoming inquest (October 2026) is a critical moment but real justice requires action beyond the courtroom.

Did you know that Labour Day is celebrated internationally on May 1st?

On May 1, 1886 in Chicago’s Haymarket Square countless working people marched to demand the 8 hour working day. They had enough of being ground-down by an impossible 12 hour workshift that made family life and leisure things out of reach to the working -class. During the rally a bomb went off and the police responded by opening fire on the crowd. Workers defended themselves the best they could. The newspapers owned by the ruling class called this act of self-defence a riot.

This event would go down as the Haymarket massacre. The leaders of the rally were hanged without substantial evidence. This total abortion of justice was a galvanizing moment for workers around the world. And the martyrdom of the Haymarket leaders led to May 1st becoming an international day of worker’s solidarity.

From Asia to Africa, Europe to Latin America, everyone would come out for May 1st. Workers used this self-legistated holiday to demand union recognition, social reforms, dignity, and sometimes revolution.

The Red Scare in America and to a lesser degree in Canada attempted to socially stigmatize socialism amongst the working class. Anti-socialism and anti-communism used national chauvinism to break us away from the labour movement of our international brothers and sisters. The Canadian Labour Day was invented to prevent international workers solidarity, which is why labour day as recognized by the state is on September 7th. Let's come together and keep the tradition alive of international working class solidarity! ✊🏾
