Research by U of T Medicine Professor Andrew Lim and third-year student Kirusanthy Kaneshwaran suggests fragmented sleep in older people with and without Alzheimer’s disease may have an effect on the brain’s immune cells.

With a personal connection to this research, Kaneshwaran, who is also a first-author on the study said, “I have a relative with Alzheimer’s disease and I have always been fascinated about memory and what is the underlying mechanism of memory. Sleep is something that a lot of people have problems with. Losing your memory is something very deep, it’s like losing yourself as a person. I feel like it’s very important that if we can prevent that in any way, we do.” bit.ly/2PCfYjP

In Dear MD to Be’s latest episode, Dr. Vaibhav Gupta says growing into your identities while balancing medical school can feel challenging but offers advice on how he managed these aspects as a student.

“One of the challenges in medical school is that you have so many different things you have to learn. From a clinical perspective, there is such a wide variety of diseases that you learn about, and everything from their pathophysiology to their management. But in addition to the clinical knowledge you learn about communication skills, which is a very important part of medical school—Interviewing skills, developing interpersonal skills with your patients, colleagues and the variety of people who you work with in a hospital or clinic setting. And at the same time, you’re trying to explore your hobbies and interests. Often were doing medical school during our formative years, where were trying to and starting to understand ourselves and really grow into our identities…” Listen to the episode here: www.dearmdtobe.com/podcasts
