University of Guelph-Humber Kinesiology instructor and soccer aficionado Dr. Richard Bucciarelli published first-of-its-kind research in Canada that paves the way for professional soccer players in the country to optimize training.

“Relationship Between the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test and Match Running Performance in Canadian Male Professional Soccer Players” examines the physical performance of athletes in the Canadian Premier League.

The Yo-Yo intermittent Recovery Test involves players performing a 20-metre shuttle run, followed by a ten-second recovery period, with the shuttle run performed at progressively increasing running speeds. The short period mimics the type of stop-go movement when playing team sports like soccer.

Until now, Canadian teams relied on data from other countries, where factors like climate, skill level, and season length have an impact on results. Dr. Bucciarelli wanted to change that – and he did.

How might incarcerated women be effectively supported when reintegrating into society?

In partnership with EFry Hope and Help for Women, a group of University of Guelph-Humber students from and collaborated on research resulting in recommendations to support reintegration.

A section of the group including Justice students Aaron Mariathas, Alana Pelay, Mina Alfarag, and Nicole Wassef, had the opportunity to showcase this research to professionals at the 2026 Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Canada National Conference, hosted at U of GH.

Psychology students Alissa Witter and Annelise Williams brought fresh perspectives about mental health to the project, in addition to the Justice students’ knowledge of the legal system, making the research holistic.

A mentor is someone who you can count on to provide guidance, share ideas with, and trust – and students at the University of Guelph-Humber can always count on instructor Charlie Janthur.

Charlie is the 2026 recipient of the University’s Outstanding Mentorship Award because he goes above and beyond the call of duty as an educator.

Whether it’s inspiring students inside the classroom or contributing to leading Guelph-Humber’s business case competition team to victory in a major global event, Charlie is helping students find their confidence and reach their potential.

“If I can help [students] achieve more than they thought they could achieve, it’s a good day,” he said.

Congratulations Charlie! 🎉
