What does legal education look like beyond the classroom?

At Osgoode's Clinical Education Fair, JD students explored clinical education programs and the learning opportunities available throughout their legal education.

Through conversations with program directors and current students, attendees learned how clinical education can provide insight into legal practice, community outreach and development, access to justice and different models of lawyering.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to Dean Detlev Zwick for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hennick JD/MBA program with us, and to Proskauer Rose LLP for hosting the reception.

We appreciate the opportunity to bring Osgoode alumni together in New York and look forward to seeing everyone again.

What builds public trust in our institutions?

Nearly 50 years after joining Osgoode Hall Law School, Governor General Louise Arbour returned to campus to discuss democracy, human rights, the rule of law and the responsibilities of the legal profession.

Drawing on a career that has spanned academia, the Supreme Court of Canada, international tribunals and the United Nations, Arbour reflected on what it takes to sustain confidence in public institutions and the importance of remaining curious, adaptable and committed to public service.

A timely conversation on the values that underpin democratic society and the role lawyers play in protecting them.

It was a pleasure to welcome Deputy Minister of Health and Osgoode alumna Shalene Curtis-Micallef (LLB ’95) back to Osgoode.

During her visit, Curtis-Micallef joined students and faculty for a thoughtful discussion on the intersection of health and law, sharing insights from her career in public service and reflecting on the experiences that shaped her journey.

Advocacy, mentorship and a commitment to legal education.

It was a pleasure to welcome alumni Harvey Strosberg (LLB ’69) and Paul Pape (LLB ’69) back to Osgoode. During their visit, they reconnected with the school, visited the Strosberg–Pape Moot Court and saw today's students developing the advocacy skills that have defined their own distinguished careers.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home and recognize the lasting impacts on Indigenous families and communities.

Reconciliation in legal education also requires us to consider how and what we learn. TRC Call to Action #28 calls on Canadian law schools to educate students about Indigenous Peoples and the law, including Indigenous law, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, residential schools and Aboriginal-Crown relations.
Earlier this month, Osgoode students and faculty attended Anishinaabe Law Camp at Giiwedin Ki in Rama First Nation. Through land-based learning, teachings and storytelling, participants engaged with Anishinaabe law and ways of knowing while reflecting on responsibility, relationships and the role of legal education in reconciliation.

Miigwetch to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and all those who generously shared their knowledge and
teachings with us.
