👏Congratulations, Maggie! Rev. Canon Maggie Helwig MDiv ‘11 is an accomplished author, respected community advocate, and treasured alum of Trinity College, Toronto, Faculty of Divinity. Recognition for her writing and work is well-deserved!

Congratulations to Maggie Helwig, winner of the 2026 Prize for Political Writing!🏆Helwig has won the prize for her book Encampment: Resistance, Grace, and an Unhoused Community.

◢ ◣ ◢

“A necessary, on-the-ground view of Canada’s homelessness crisis, Encampment succeeds where much of political handwringing and wishful thinking around housing and poverty consistently fail. Maggie Helwig never lets compassion impede lucidity, and her book avoids both cynicism and battle fatigue. The result: a clear-eyed call to not look away, but to deepen understanding of the issue. As more and more of our neighbours find themselves living unsheltered, this book is essential reading.”—2026 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize jury (Norma Dunning, Chantal Hébert, and Paul Wells)

◣◥ ◥

The Shaughnessy Cohen Prize, sponsored by , was awarded to Helwig at Politics & the Pen, an annual fundraiser in Ottawa organized by a third-party committee to benefit Writers’ Trust. A total of $460,000 was raised at the event in direct support of Canadian authors.

It is 175 years since the laying of the cornerstone of ‘Old Trinity’ the original home of Trinity College, University of Toronto!

April 30, 1851: Trinity College was incorporated and the cornerstone was laid on our original site on Queen Street West, Toronto.

🎂 2027 will mark 175 years since we first opened our doors on January 15, 1852 at our original site. Stay tuned for details on how we will be marking this special anniversary! 🎉

Support Trinity College, University of Toronto on . You can make a difference in the lives of today’s students with your generosity!

Help Trinity Celebrate Giving Day! On March 26, alumni and supporters across the tri-campus will come together to celebrate the fourth annual – a day to make a difference together through the power of generosity and connection. Trinity is proud to be part of this university-wide movement once again.

Meet the College's Giving Day Ambassador – Trinity alum and Academic Don Noor Pannu 💙💛

"I’m so excited to be part of this year’s U of T Giving Day, and I hope you’ll join me in making an even bigger impact for the Trinity College community," said Noor Pannu, Global Professional Master of Laws candidate at U of T and Junior Fellow at Massey College. "I’ve experienced firsthand how much our spaces and community mean to students, faculty and everyone who walks through our doors.

"Like many of you, I’ve found belonging, connection and inspiration here – whether through the lifelong friendships I made or the support I received as a student whose family sacrificed so much for my education. Trinity changed my life, and I know that’s true for other alumni like me. That’s why I’m honoured to be a Giving Day Ambassador this year, helping celebrate philanthropy, community and the impact of all who hold a special connection to our vibrant, world-leading college."

There’s even more reason to give now! Until March 26, when you make a gift to any featured Trinity fund, it will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000, while matching funds last – doubling your impact for students and researchers.

On International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the founders of the Trinity College Friends of the Library! Not only are they exceptional volunteers and donors themselves, but over 50 years they have spread their love and commitment for Trinity College, University of Toronto and John W. Graham Library to hundreds of others and helped raise over $1 million.

They are a wonderful example of women making a difference, founding an inclusive legacy that continues to connect with and welcome alumni and book lovers to a unique community at Trinity.

Stay warm and safe, ! Today’s special Evensong at St. James Cathedral is cancelled due to the weather. Come hear the Trinity College Chapel Choir on Wednesday at 5:15pm in the Trinity Chapel.

Environment Canada has upgraded the class of the winter storm headed to Toronto from Yellow to Orange, with up to 40 centimeters of snow now in the forecast.

In the interest of staff, choir, and everyone's safety, we have decided to cancel this evening’s service of Evensong scheduled for today, Sunday, January 25, at 4:30pm.
