☁️ Make Time to Unwind ☁️

As we finish off the school year and enter exam season, the RMP would just like to remind you guys to take care of yourselves during these stressful times.

Don’t burn yourself out, take time to destress and relax. Studying is important, but so is your mental health.

We hope you have a successful end of the year, and a relaxed exam week!

💡Team Bonding Question - Week 3💡

This week's question is “You can have anyone fictional as your imaginary friend - who do you choose & why?” 🧐

- This will help with getting *CCR* credits as an alternative for when you guys can’t make it to a social.
- You can work together with your mentor/mentees to answer the question or each give your own answer to the question. All we ask from the mentors is for you to fill out the form in our bio with your AND your mentees’ answers and submit them before the next biweekly question comes out.
- Submission link is in our bio.

💡UofT Research Highlights!💡

Another week of an exciting development in disease diagnostics! UofT researchers have been successful in developing a nanoparticle that can help with early diagnosis of the Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder characterized by the irreversible memory loss. It can take up to 20 years for symptoms to be appear, but by then it is usually too late to try to reverse the disease. Hence, a lot of effort has been dedicated to developing tools to diagnose the disease earlier.

The newly developed nanoparticle is capable of crossing the brain-blood barrier to accumulate in areas that are concentrated in unstable oxygen molecules that are markers of early Alzheimer’s onset. The subsequent nanoparticle reaction then produces a contrast that can be picked up by an MRI machine and the scans can be used for further diagnosis. While there is much more to follow up on in translating this discovery from bench to bedside, it is quite exciting news.

💡Team Bonding Questions💡

We have come up with biweekly Team Bonding Questions that would help you and your mentees get to know each other better and work together to answer the question.

This will also help with getting *CCR* credits as an alternative for when you guys can’t make it to a social.

How this will work is that every other week you and your mentees will be given a fun and random question that will help facilitate team bonding and team work.

You guys can work together to answer the question or each give your own answer to the question. All we ask from the mentors is for you to fill out this form in our bio with your AND your mentees’ answers and submit them before the next biweekly question comes out.

💡UofT Research Highlights!💡

This week, we turn our attention towards the exciting potential of using biomarkers to improve the success rate of cancer drugs that are being developed.
Cancer treatment is an ever exciting and evolving field. Most new drugs that are being developed often fail to pass the regulatory testing mechanisms not because the drug in itself is ineffective but because the way they are being tested for their effectiveness.
Check out this article on how UofT researchers have combined powerful machine-learning statistical tools to analyze how using biomarkers could lower the clinical trial failure risks.

🔈Calling all researchers! 🔈

On March 24th at 5pm EST, the Research Mentorship Program will be hosting a mini-research seminar. At our seminar, we would like to feature some of the amazing research and researchers here at UofT!

If you are a researcher, have published any research, or are in the process of conducting research in any field, we would love for you to be a presenter at our upcoming event. You will be given the opportunity to showcase your research to other students, raise awareness on your research topic, and maybe even inspire other students to conduct research within the field!

All you will need to do is create a PowerPoint slide demonstrating what you did, and a 5-10 minute presentation on your research. The research you have conducted or are conducting can be of any kind - from a course, ROP, work-study position, graduate research, etc.

💡UofT Research Highlights!💡

This week, we turn our attention towards disease diagnostics. Rapid developments have been made in this field as scientist come up with ways that can diagnose diseases more accurately and more efficiently with the end goal of making these services more accessible and affordable. Check out this article on how UofT researchers have identified an exciting new to adapt the commonly found glucose meter to test for diseases, and the test for Covid-19 showing promising results.
