Today, we honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities.

Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation call us to learn the truth about residential schools and their continuing impacts on First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

For those of us connected to education, this learning carries a particular responsibility. Make time to listen to Survivors, learn from Indigenous-led resources and read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Every Child Matters.

Today, we mark Emancipation Day and reflect on an important chapter in Canada’s history.

August 1 commemorates the day the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in 1834, leading to the freedom of many enslaved people across the British Empire, including here in Canada.

It is also a time to remember the injustices endured by people of African descent, recognize the strength and resilience of Black communities, and acknowledge the lasting impact of slavery and anti-Black racism.

As we reflect, let us continue to learn from this history and work together toward a more just and inclusive Canada.

Thank you to everyone at Entente Education Canada for this beautiful feature and for sharing my story and artwork on the cover, as well throughout the issue-The Home Issue (is where your heart is) entente.ca

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity. ❤️🎨

Seeing my painting alongside such a meaningful theme feels especially personal. Home, to me, is more than a place — it is comfort, memories, connection, and the quiet feeling of belonging.
