Last month, we held the new iSkills workshop “Beading Our Relations: Stitching Story, Memory, and Métis Practice”! Faculty of Information PhD Candidate Andrew Wiebe introduced students to the fundamentals of Métis seed beadwork through the creation of earrings and flat stitch brooches. Alongside this hands-on work, students engaged with the historical and cultural significance of beadwork in Métis communities and reflected on how creative practices can carry and convey cultural knowledge. Earlier this week, we held the iSkills workshop “Simple Book Repairs for General & Reference Collections”! Andrew Huot of Big River Bindery led students in an intensive introduction to techniques for repairing books, including attaching loose endsheets, hinge tightening, and more. 📖

This was our last workshop held in the fourth floor Student Commons before the Bissell Building is set to undergo a revitalization project starting later this summer. We have loved welcoming students to many hands-on workshops in this space, and we can’t wait to see everyone again soon elsewhere on campus! 🏛️

Master of Information student Angela Kim is the winner of our Winter semester iSkills raffle! 🎉

This year we offered prize pack draws for students and alumni who completed our anonymous feedback survey. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback after attending workshops. Your input is extremely helpful, both for us at the Learning Hub and for the workshop instructors themselves, so that we know what worked well and what would be more useful next time.

☀️ The Summer 2026 feedback survey is linked in our bio and is open for responses. If you attend a workshop this Summer, consider letting us know how it went. We will draw another winner in August!

On May 28, we held the iSkills workshop “Introduction to Exhibition Installation: 3D”! Following up on the fun and intensive 2D installation workshop the previous week, Micah Donovan, Exhibition and Project Coordinator at the , led students in a hands-on crash course in installing 3D objects of various kinds.

Students practised object handling, low-budget mount-making, and planning displays for security and accessibility. We even had a special guest appearance from Denise Birkhofer, Assistant Professor in the Master of Museum Studies Program and Curator at the Art Museum, who led students in a mock curatorial debrief of the installation experience. The workshop concluded with deinstallation steps, an important part of the life cycle of many exhibitions. Swipe to see photos of the installation in progress and in its completed form! 📸

Last week, we held our first iSkills workshop of the Summer term: “Introduction to Exhibition Installation: 2D”! 🖼️

Micah Donovan, Exhibition and Project Coordinator at , led students in a hands-on introduction to physically installing two-dimensional works in museums and galleries. The group carried out a mock installation on the 5th floor of the Bissell Building, practising skills like measuring, levelling, mounting, and object handling. Welcome to the Summer semester! 🌞 We are excited to share that our writing, technical skills, and research tutors are available all summer long. iSchool students can book free, online, one-on-one sessions with Ciara, Paula, Aline, or Julia.

All of our tutors are iSchool PhD students, so they know your professors and fields of study. The tutors can help you with more than just course assignments; they are here to support you with any ongoing projects (think theses, grant proposals, cover letters...) and with your academic and scholarly development in general!

As we wrap up the academic year, we wanted to thank you for your participation in Learning Hub programming… and share some stats we are proud of! 📊

Over the 2025-26 academic year, we held 81 iSkills workshops and, for the first time, two full-weekend bootcamps for incoming students. We drew on the expertise of 54 workshop instructors, and we accumulated more than 1800 registrations, including both students and alumni. On average, feedback survey respondents rated iSkills workshops at 9/10, in terms of how likely they would be recommend them to a classmate or colleague.

Our 6 Writing, Research, and Technical Skills Tutors held over 300 one-on-one meetings with students this year across all iSchool programs, including both assignment help and general academic support.

The Learning Hub will remain active this Summer! Stay tuned for an announcement about tutoring services and some in-person and online iSkills workshops. There is lots more to come! 🌞

As the semester wraps up, we are looking back on all the fun, hands-on learning that happened at iSkills workshops this Winter! Here are some snapshots we haven’t yet shared. 📸

Students and alumni practised wide-ranging skills, including podcast recording and editing, web accessibility analysis, exhibit installation, recovering books from water damage, and much, much more. Which events did you attend this semester?

To help you tackle your final projects and exams, the Learning Hub is hosting a second session of “End of Term 911: Academic Support for Finals Season”! 🚨

Join us on Zoom on Wednesday, April 8, any time between 4pm-7pm. You can work and study in silence in the company of fellow students (a.k.a accountability buddies), or join a breakout room for 1-on-1 support from our Writing and Tech tutors. They will be ready to help you with final assignments and studying, no matter which stage you’re at: from brainstorming, to research tips, to troubleshooting, to refining, editing, and citations. 👩‍💻
