Today we celebrate National Astronomy Day by looking back at a moment that brought space a little closer to campus.

A few weeks ago, York University students used the Allan I. Carswell Observatory telescope to track and capture an image of NASA’s Artemis II mission from our campus, an impressive achievement completed in the early hours of the morning!

The video of the Artemis II imaging, along with a discussion of the observations, is available for public viewing on the Allan I. Carswell Observatory YouTube channel.

To conclude our celebration of this year’s Faculty of Science Top 30 Alumni Under 30, we are proud to congratulate our outstanding alumna, Claire Del Zotto (BSc ’24).

Claire Del Zotto is a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto mentoring younger students in STEM. She serves as a committee chair for the Ontario Medical Students Association, where she is organizing a three-day conference bringing over 100 medical student leaders from across Ontario to discuss healthcare innovation. She represents her faculty as co-organizer of the MD Program Orientation Week for over 300 incoming learners, raising over $70,000 in donations to ensure that cost was not a barrier to student participation.

With an interest in healthy aging, she recently founded Scrubs and Shrubs, a mindfulness-focussed gardening group that connects medical students to older adults who have a shared interest in sustainability. Her current research addresses how limited access to menopause care impacts quality of life.

We are inspired by the impact she is making and look forward to following her continued journey. Congratulations, Claire! 👏

What an inspiring day!✨
Biology student Seyed Masoumi Lari and the Arbalest Rocketry team shared the magic of rocket science by showcasing their rocket to a class of 140 students in SC/NATS1530 The Science of Spaceflight, taught by Prof. Robin Metcalfe. From exploring science payloads to watching the Artemis 2 launch together, it was a truly memorable class for everyone involved.

We can’t wait to see this rocket soar at the Launch Canada Challenge in Timmins this August!🌕🚀

Amazing work by the team: Seyed, Jordan Birley, Ronik Jagdev, and Nathan Minuk.
Thanks to STS PhD student Jaime Babb for the photos!

We were delighted to welcome York University’s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Lisa Philipps, to the Faculty of Science yesterday! ✨

Led by Robert Tsushima, Chair of Biology, and joined by Dean Maydianne Andrade, President Philipps toured several of our innovative research facilities, including the MiBAR Lab, the MI2 Lab, and the Caputo Lab.
Throughout the visit, she had the opportunity to meet with students, faculty, and staff, gaining firsthand insight into how our learning and research environments support scientific discovery, impact, and hands-on learning.

It was a pleasure to host President Philipps and to highlight the remarkable work taking place every day within the Faculty of Science. 🧬🧪🔬

Today, the Faculty of Science celebrated International Day of Women & Girls in Science with a special event.
Cohosted by the Departments of Chemistry and Science, Technology & Society, the event marked the launch a new book titled “Women in the History of Quantum Physics”, co-edited by Professor Daniela Monaldi. It was an inspiring afternoon recognizing the contributions of women in science and reflecting on the histories that shape the field today. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating and supporting women in STEM. 🧪🧬⚛️
