The Faculty of Science at York University is home to five Departments with over 150 full-time faculty members, more than 4,300 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate studies, 80 staff, and 13,000 alumni. We receive about $15 million in research funding annually, and our scientists focus on research areas spanning nanotechnology to ecosystems and planetary systems.

That’s a wrap on another summer of science! 🧪🔬☀️

This summer, young scientists joined us at York University for hands-on experiments, fun activities and plenty of opportunities to discover the world of STEM.

We kicked off the summer with Faculty of Science Dean Maydianne Andrade introducing campers to her research on black widow spiders 🕷️ and also welcomed MP Judy Sgro, who stopped by to meet some of our young scientists and learn more about the program.

A special thank you to MP Judy Sgro for visiting us, and to Actua Canada for their continued support of our programs and for helping make the visit possible! ❤️

Thank you as well to all of our campers, instructors and staff who made this summer possible. We loved seeing so many young scientists learn, experiment and explore with us!

A launch to remember for York University! 🚀
York’s Arbalest Rocketry team competed at the 2026 Launch Canada Challenge, a national competition where university teams design, build and launch high-powered rockets.
Their rocket, Red Robin, reached 20,000 feet in York’s most successful launch yet, with a special guest calling the countdown: Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield!
On board was a science experiment involving light-responsive algae cells, led by recent Faculty of Science Biology graduate Seyed Masoumi Lari alongside Ozzy Mermut.
The team took home second place for Red Robin and second place in the Science Payload Challenge! 🥈
Congratulations to the entire team on this incredible achievement! 👏

Today, we extend our sincere thanks to several leaders who are concluding their leadership roles after making a meaningful impact across the Faculty of Science.
Thank you to Robert Tsushima, Michael Scheid, Robin Metcalfe, Christopher Jang, and Michael Haslam for your leadership, service, and dedication to our students, faculty, staff, and broader community. We are grateful for all you have contributed and wish you continued success in the next chapter of your journeys.
As we mark these leadership transitions, we are also pleased to welcome Tamara Kelly as Chair of Biology; Robin Metcalfe as Associate Dean, Students; Robin Marushia as Director, Division of Natural Science; Christopher Caputo as Head, Bethune College; and Georges Monette as Chair of Mathematics and Statistics.

Today we celebrate National Astronomy Day by looking back at a moment that brought space a little closer to campus.

A few weeks ago, York University students used the Allan I. Carswell Observatory telescope to track and capture an image of NASA’s Artemis II mission from our campus, an impressive achievement completed in the early hours of the morning!

The video of the Artemis II imaging, along with a discussion of the observations, is available for public viewing on the Allan I. Carswell Observatory YouTube channel.
