A community health nurse, Rachel Pardoe (BScN 2012) has amassed over a million followers on her social platforms, and has recently published her first cookbook "Sourdough Everything," sharing both her passion for baking and her unique voice -part nurse, part baker – as a member of the sourdough community.

“It is surreal to see how this passion project that started during the pandemic, has morphed into a business and essentially a full-time job,” says Pardoe, “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my love of baking with the world.”

Nursing alumna Eveline Porter (MN 2002) shares why she has donated on Giving Day.

Donations to our Educating Nursing’s Future Fund will be matched by U of T up to $1000. Give over $1000 and your gift will also be matched by Bloomberg Nursing, tripling your impact.

For Shirwa Geele, a Master of Nursing student in the Health Systems, Leadership and Administration program at Bloomberg Nursing, receiving the 2024-2025 GNSS Black and Indigenous Student Award, affirmed his commitment to improving health systems, and enabled him to apply to graduate school sooner.

Geele says that after learning about this award, it also demonstrated for him that Bloomberg Nursing is committed to fostering growth in individuals with lived experiences of racial injustice and inequity, not just through words but through action.

"I hope that for other students, knowing this award exists means they don’t wait to apply to graduate school in order to advance in their careers as nurse leaders,” says Geele.

Bloomberg Nursing alumnus Michael Villeneuve has received the Order of Canada in recognition of his four-decade long career in nursing. This distinct honour recognizes Villeneuve’s leadership behind many transformations in the nursing profession, and his role as the former CEO of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA-AIIC).

“I was speechless. It’s very emotional to receive the Order of Canada because it comes from your country,” says Villeneuve. “I’ve been lucky to have received honours before in nursing and from nurses, but this is different, because it recognizes work done across the country for Canadians and Canada’s nursing workforce.”

Nursing retention begins in the classroom, through finanical support. As a student Joyce Rankin’s education was supported by scholarships and bursaries she received from generous donors. Every little bit helped she says, and it is why she never underestimates the impact of donating to student education.

“I really encourage other alumni to get involved, if you are not able to donate with financial resources, get involved with the faculty, find something that speaks to your passion, and help us build up our fellow nurses,” says Rankin.

Nancy Rudyk comes from a family of nurses. Her mother was a nurse, and her grandmother served in the military as a nurse assistant during WWI. Now, Rudyk is giving back in support of the education of future nurses, in honour of her mother and her family. She shared with Bloomberg Nursing photos she found of her grandmother, Bertha Goodwin, serving during WWI including a note from a solider in her care.

“One of the soldiers had written about how selfless my grandmother was, how she remained caring even when she was run off her feet, and I think that speaks to the incredible dedication and perseverance of nurses,” says Rudyk. “I’m proud of that legacy, and I look forward to being able to continue to support new generations of nurses any way that I can.”
