Hillel Ryerson, Hasbara Fellowships Canada, and StandWithUs Canada are extremely concerned about the recent advertisement for the Generous Futures program published by Ryerson University’s Alumni Affairs.
We were deeply disappointed that the program and the advertisement omitted antisemitism as a form of oppression. According to recent data from Statistics Canada, Jewish Canadians are the most frequently targeted religious groups for hate-motivated crimes in the country.
We appreciate the prompt responses from members of the university regarding the alumni newsletter. We also recognize the invaluable support Ryerson provides for Jewish students on campus. The university’s collaboration with Hillel Ryerson for Multifaith Shabbat Dinner, its sponsorship of Hillel’s annual Holocaust Education Week, and its general willingness to engage constructively in Jewish communal issues impacting Ryerson students are all greatly appreciated.
The explanation provided through email responses, as well as the acknowledgement of antisemitism as a serious and lasting form of oppression go a long way towards showing support towards the Jewish community. Beyond statements, however, we would like to see more action on the part of the university in hosting events and promoting speakers that address growing antisemitism.
We offer ourselves as a resource to help identify educators who can speak about antisemitism on campus and promote the well-being of Jewish students on campus. We look forward to seeing such an event occur in the near future.
We also request a public statement from the university explaining the omission of antisemitism and articulating plans to include a session focusing on it in the future. We also request that any future marketing decisions consider how neglecting forms of oppression can be harmful toward any group, and to keep such factors in mind for future releases. Consulting with campus-based Jewish organizations for future programs will contribute to a more inclusive campus for Jewish students.
We look forward to continuing to work with the administration to advance the great work at Ryerson.
