Have you watched Hollywood Shuffle (1987)? Then check out "the Hollywood Jim Crow: the Racial Politics of the Movie Industry", now on the Black History Month display at Innis College Library!

The film hilariously exposes how Black actors get pushed into stereotypes and shut out of other opportunities. This book explains the bigger picture- how Hollywood's power structures and hiring practices have historically limited who gets to tell and embody certain stories, as well as who gets to succeed. Have a happy and informative Black History Month!✨✊🏿❀️

Have you watched I am Not your Negro (2016)? Then check out "I am Not Your Negro", also by James Baldwin and now on the Black History Month display at Innis College Library!

The film brings Baldwin's unfinished manuscript to life through archival footage and narration. The book lets you sit directly with his words- reflecting on race in America, the lives of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., and the country's unfinished reckoning with its history of racial violence. Have a happy and informative Black History Month!✨✊🏿❀️

Have you watched Tongues Untied (1989)? Then check out "the Black Body in Ecstasy", now on the Black History Month display at Innis College Library!

The film is an intimate celebration of Black q***r love and voice. The book adds another layer by exploring why joy and intimacy for marginalized communities matter, and why pleasure and the ability to love who we want isn't separate from politics, but part of it. Have a happy and informative Black History Month!✨✊🏿❀️

Have you watched Killer of Sheep (1978)? Then check out "Black Cinema 1898-1971: Regeneration", now on the Black History Month display at Innis College Library!

This book traces the history of Black filmmakers who pioneered independent film movements long before mainstream recognition, reshaping American cinema through community storytelling, and resisting stereotyping through creative autonomy. Have a happy and informative Black History Month! ✨✊🏿❀️
