From vision to reality: the years-long transformation of our Indigenous Healing Garden. 🌿

See the garden’s evolution in photos, from the site before construction and a concept rendering to the construction process and, finally, the welcoming campus space that officially opened last week.

Creating the garden was one of Emmanuel College Principal HyeRan Kim-Cragg’s first priorities when she began her role in 2022. Rooted in a commitment to truth and reconciliation, the garden offers a place to connect, learn and reflect.

As Kim-Cragg said, “May it be a place of rest, delight, and healing for all who spend time in it from this day on.”

A space for healing and reflection🌿

After a year of growth, bloom and community use, Victoria University officially opened its Indigenous Healing Garden today with an afternoon of ceremony and connection.

Professor Jonathan Hamilton-Diabo described the garden as “a space meant for everybody” and “part of the process of the healing journey.”

The opening included drumming and song by Folashade Kortee, remarks from Dr. Dan Longboat and a sweetgrass ceremony led by Hamilton-Diabo and Shannon Simpson, senior director, Indigenous Initiatives at U of T.

📚 What’s in the box? More than you might expect.

What does it take to put on the Victoria College Book Sale? This year, volunteers unpacked more than 1,300 boxes of donated books and media, with months of sorting and organizing behind the scenes.

And over the years, the sale has turned up some remarkable finds, from signed books and rare editions to highly collectible records.
