We’re pleased to announce that Professor Karen Kubey will be featured at the University of Toronto’s Presidents’ Circle Fall Lecture on October 21.

Her talk, "More Than a Law: How Architecture Shapes the Right to Housing", explores the spatial and architectural dimensions of the right to housing, bringing together collaborative research from six cities across the Americas with speculative work by Master of Architecture students at the Daniels Faculty.

The lecture offers a timely look at how architecture can help shape the ways we understand, support and realize the right to housing.

We’re proud to see Professor Kubey’s research and the work of our MArch students featured in the Presidents’ Circle Fall Lecture.

Oct. 16: How Art History Teaches—Images, Infrastructure, Cognition

How do students learn to see historically? The answer has always depended on art historians' systems for reproducing and handling their objects of study, from slide libraries to textbooks to digital databases. In 1926, the Carnegie Corporation began supplying North American universities with teaching materials that helped launch Canada’s first art history program at the University of Toronto. A century later, this international symposium asks how pedagogical infrastructure has shaped the discipline, and what cognitive research can tell us about how students learn to look, remember, and interpret.

Assistant Professor Karen Kubey and Professor Richard M. Sommer will present this week at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2026 Intersections Research Conference: Urban Design Matters, taking place Oct. 1-3 in New York.

Sommer will take part in the Oct. 2 research session, "What Urban Design Is Today: Productive Tensions, Expanding Roles, and the Disciplinary In-Between." Kubey will take part in the Oct. 3 research session, “Rights, Equity & Urban Design,” presenting “Urban Design and the Right to Housing in Argentina and Brazil: A Human Rights Framework for Social Housing.”

Graduate Bareera Iqbal (MArch 2026) will share a poster presentation of work developed in Kubey's 2025-26 master's thesis studio, Architecture and the Right to Housing. "A Place to Stay: Reparative Architecture for Black Cultural Continuity in Toronto's Little Jamaica," builds on Iqbal's earlier Options Studio work for Community Land Trust with instructors Shane Laptiste and Tura Cousins Wilson.

Daniels welcomes Rhayne Vermette as the 2026 Filmmaker-in-Residence.

As part of her residency, Vermette will give a public lecture on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:00 p.m. The lecture will offer an opportunity for students, faculty and the wider community to hear Vermette discuss her artistic practice, filmmaking process and ongoing explorations of image, memory, place and time.

Architects Against Housing Alienation (AAHA) has launched a new public website showcasing 2025-26 student work from the 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯!, a cross-Canada architecture initiative that mobilized students and faculty to imagine alternatives to the country's current housing system.

Participating in the Superstudio were MArch students enrolled in 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 taught by Assistant Professor Karen Kubey.
