Redefining Design 2026 brought the School of Fashion together in an inspiring celebration of talent, creativity, and artistry. The annual Graduate Showcase featured two runway shows, presentations, and displays from the graduating classes.

Recruitment kicked off the event in the morning by bringing in high school students to experience hands-on workshops, demonstrations, and watch the dress rehearsal for the fashion show. The Fashion Arts Industry and Friends & Family show featured collections from 33 emerging designers, each presenting their unique vision and craftsmanship to a panel of industry judges.

Across the exhibition floor, Cosmetic Techniques & Management (CTM), Floral Design (FDN), and Visual Merchandising (VMA), showed off their skills with a range of displays. Floral Design graduates captivated guests upon arrival with 24 striking floral creations. Cosmetic Techniques & Management featured seven students presenting their artistry on the show floor while an additional 11 students worked backstage as makeup artists for the runway models.

This year, graduating Visual Merchandising students collaborated to create one large-scale installation that transformed the exhibition space with a stunning visual impact.

The Spanish steps showcased garments from the Seneca Fashion Resource Centre. The exhibition included designs from faculty, a Hudson’s Bay coat from the 1964 Olympics, dance costumes from the National Ballet of Canada, and pieces worn by Mila Mulroney – just to name a few.

Dr. Graham J. Murphy, School of English and Liberal Studies, has written his eighth book, Marvel’s Squadron Supreme: A Critical Companion, has been recently published by Palgrave Macmillan.

It is his second book for the Palgrave Science Fiction and Fantasy: A New Canon series, which, according to Palgrave’s description of the series, “provides short introductions to key works of science fiction and fantasy (SFF), speaking to why a text, trilogy, or series matters to SFF as a genre as well as to readers, scholars, and fans.”

In Marvel’s Squadron Supreme: A Critical Companion, Dr. Murphy closely reads Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme maxi-series for its complex, contradictory, yet ultimately productive engagement with the social dreaming of utopianism and, in doing so, addresses the complexities of what it means to pursue a radically alternative society, and whether the cost is worth paying.

In addition, Dr. Murphy is also featured in the Imagined Futures: Cyberpunk episode (April 6, 2026) of the Object podcast. In conjunction with fellow guests Dr. Anna McFarlane, University of Glasgow, and Elon Solo, co-curator of the Syd Mead: Future Pastime exhibit, Dr. Murphy provides a concise overview of cyberpunk, a multimedia science fiction movement that emerged and dominated in the 1980s, and whose impact is still being felt today.

The Imagined Futures: Cyberpunk episode of the Object podcast is available on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Seneca professor’s creations featured prominently at the biggest event in Canadian music.

Philip Sparks, professor in the School of Fashion, designed the two tuxedos that were worn by host Mae Martin during the JUNO Awards on March 29, 2026 – one for the red carpet and one for the ceremony.

Sparks says he is honoured that he and the team at his Toronto studio were selected to design the comedian’s outfits.

Want to learn more? Both CBC News and Elle Canada spoke to Sparks about what went into creating the suits.

Seneca Broadcasting - Television (RTVT) student, Mason Benitez, recently had the incredible opportunity to work with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) during the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Being part of a globally significant event was both surreal and deeply rewarding for him.

“I joined the CBC team as a Program Assistant – TV / Shot Lister, supporting live sports coverage at the highest level. In this role, I was responsible for organizing and tracking visual elements to assist producers and editors. In a fast-paced Olympic environment, precision and communication were everything. Every detail mattered,” said Benitez.

Working on a production of this scale reinforced the importance of preparation, teamwork, and adaptability – skills he developed during his time in Seneca’s RTVT program. He credits the hands-on training, live studio simulations and production fundamentals he gained in the program to prepare him for the intensity of live events.

“I am especially grateful to my Professor Dany Tremblay, whose mentorship and support helped connect me with this opportunity. Having faculty who actively advocate for their students makes a meaningful difference, and I’m incredibly thankful for their support,” continued Benitez.

"It was a fantastic opportunity, and I was happy to recommend Mason. That is what our program is designed to deliver: giving students practical knowledge and experience to allow them to step right into the TV and Film production industry,” explained Dany Tremblay, professor, RTVT.

Representing both CBC and Seneca on a national level filled Benitez with pride, not only as a broadcaster, but as a Canadian and a sports fan. The experience strengthened his passion for sports media and affirmed that he’s where he’s meant to be. He urges current Seneca students to take advantage of every hands-on opportunity, to build relationships with their peers, and trust the skills they’re developing. Following his strong performance, CBC later invited Benitez to continue contributing to their Paralympics team.

“I look forward to continuing my journey in sports media and building on the foundation Seneca helped me create. GO CANADA!” enthused Benitez.

On Tuesday, March 10, Tim Yeung, the Writer-Director of the feature film Finch & Midland, and Actress-Associate Producer, Skye Chan (Seneca RTVT alumnus-Valedictorian), attended Professor Christopher Sweeney's Capstone Film Mentoring-Postproduction Management class to talk about the process of making, marketing and distributing the film. All students from the RTVT program were invited to take part in this exciting opportunity to meet with working film professionals.

Writer-Director Yeung explained his long journey to producing this independent Cantonese and English film, shooting in Toronto and working with many well-known Hong Kong performers. Given that the co-production treaty between Canada and Hong Kong was last updated in the 1980s, it was not possible to have an official co-production, but ingenuity and hard work made it happen. It was an eye-opening and inspiring talk as he encouraged our students to work hard and pursue their dreams.

Seneca Polytechnic’s first workspace dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) is now open at Newnham Campus’s Centre for Innovation, Technology & Entrepreneurship (CITE).

The AI Lab, located in room K2020, is available to students and employees. It is designed for AI training, project work and collaboration, and features 12 specialized workstations and three group meeting spaces with large monitors.

At the workstations, visitors can access a range of leading AI platforms free of charge, including ChatGPT Plus, Claude AI Pro, GitHub Copilot, Gemini Pro, Microsoft Copilot 365, Microsoft Foundry, Midjourney, Notebook LM and more.

Seneca’s AI Thought Leaders Panos Panagiotakopoulos and Kent Peel, along with experts from Seneca Libraries, Teaching and Learning, and academic areas, will also be available in this space to share knowledge, answer questions, and deliver workshops for both AI experts and first-time users.

“The AI Lab offers a space for the Seneca community to experiment with the world’s most advanced AI software for free,” said Mr. Panagiotakopoulos. "It will also highlight AI-driven solutions and showcase student capstone projects in an inspiring, immersive environment.”

Along with the lab, a new AI-focused portal will soon be available on MySeneca to provide students and employees with access to training materials, guidelines and resources. Students from Seneca’s software-related programs are contributing to the development of this portal and will also support lab operations as part of their experiential learning.

The third annual edition of the Silver Screen Shorts event provided students in the Honours Bachelor of Communications & Media program with a great opportunity to showcase their creativity and professionalism.

The event was the culmination of the fall term of the Intro to Audio and Video Production course.

Like any good film festival, Silver Screen Shorts also included award presentations and a red-carpet experience.

At another capstone event, students in the Multiplatform Storytelling course were tasked with creating short film projects, including marketing campaigns and production documents.

The students presented their materials to a star-studded panel of professionals from across the film industry, including award-winning director Tristan Barrocks, environmental filmmaker Dr. Peyman Naeemi and Emmy Award-winning director Stefan Scaini.

The filmmakers critiqued each submission, offering students valuable feedback that will help shape their careers.

On Friday, January 9, former Ontario Progressive Conservative Party (PC) leader, Tim Hudak, joined the Real Property Administration (Assessment & Appraisal) (RPA) graduating class over Zoom for a discussion on the real estate industry in Ontario, in addition to giving them career advice on how careers rarely move in straight lines.

He focused on the 3-pillars that guided his career:

Take chances: the kind that test you and put you in the arena.
Work hard: earn a reputation for delivering.
Build lasting, trusting relationships: the world is smaller than you think.
Tim had a distinguished 21-year career as a Member of Provincial Parliament, Cabinet Minister, and Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

For over seven years, Tim served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), Canada’s largest provincial professional association.

Under Tim’s leadership, OREA transformed into one of Ontario’s most impactful advocacy groups, making great strides in strengthening consumer protection, keeping the dream of home ownership alive, and creating a new health and insurance benefits program for all realtors.

As a result, Tim was named one of the most powerful people in North American residential real estate by Swanepoel Power 200 for five consecutive years.

Most recently, Tim launched Tim Hudak Consulting, which offers industry-leading executive support through innovative Peer Councils for CEOs and Advocacy Executives across the country.

Earlier this semester, three teams of students from the School of Creative Arts and Animation challenged themselves to work 24 hours straight, creating a 30 second animation. The 24 Hours: Animation Contest for Students requires teammates to create a completely original animation based on a given theme within the allotted timeframe. To add another level of difficulty, students were barred from using pre-made assets; everything had to be made within the same 24 hours.

Out of 800 films submitted, two Seneca teams were placed in the top 15: Team Jade in 14th place and Team Name Pending in 12th place. Team D-Blockers, a team of first semester Seneca students placed in the top ten for the “Team Name Graphic” category and for the “Behind the Scenes” category. The students created shorts about the strange happenings children’s creativity can bring, the parallel dimensions waiting on the other side of the playground, and a troubleshooting alien trying to get home!
