FREE TALK AT RYERSON JANUARY 20TH

The International Issues Discussion (IID) series at Ryerson University is pleased to present its first event of the Winter 2016 term, “Child Soldier: A Conversation with Michel Chikwanine.”

Our guest will be Michel Chikwanine, who has overcome unimaginable pain and struggles. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Michel grew up amid the terror of the Great War of Africa. Much of his childhood was ravaged by the death and decay of a war that claimed the lives of 5.8 million people, his father included, and forced him to be a child soldier. Michel now inspires people to believe in their ability to make a difference and leaves audiences with a new perspective on life, a sense of hope through social responsibility, and a desire for change.

His talk will be Wednesday, January 20th, 630-830 pm, in ENG 103 (George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre: 245 Church Street, at the corner of Gould and Church: see www.ryerson.ca/maps) at Ryerson University, Toronto.

The Lebanese government (Education Minister Elias Bou Saab) is welcoming as many Syrian refugee children as possible into their schools... and it is not costing the families anything. They are relying on the community to help fund these children to allow them to receive an education. A right that all children have, yet many do not get met due to ongoing conflict.
Amazing the difference that one decision can make.

Lebanon aims to double those enrolled in the country's schools from last year to reach 200,000. And it's not charging the Syrian families a penny for this service.

Children from 40 countries were asked what they believe to be important goals in order to improve their lives.
Their answers are simple, concise and should be at the top of everyone's list. They aim to better the whole of humanity, not just themselves. They are thinking not just about their lives, but the lives of the children and youth of the future.

The new Global Goals will affect billions of children across the planet, so it's important that their voices are heard.

One of the many issues that can not be solved with hand outs or short term changes. We should be looking at these types of situations through the lens of children's rights (as well as human rights) in order to creating sustainable, appropriate, and empowering solutions.

ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING THE VOICES OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH HEARD IN DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THEM?

The first International Child Participation in International Protection Conference is being held in Toronto, Canada at Ryerson University from October 5-6, 2015, with an additional preliminary Conference for Youth being held from October 3rd to 4th. The conference will focus on barriers to meaningful children’s participation and prospective solutions. We will consider how research can be translated into action and how children’s participation can be measured and monitored going forward. We are calling youth to take part in the conversation!

Fantastic opportunity for youth engagement in the RCMP!

Attached is information on how to apply to be a youth (ages 13-17) participating in ensuring that youth voices are represented in the RCMP. In addition, the youth selected will also assist in the development of effective youth strategies and initiatives. One youth from every province and territory will be selected.
The meetings will be done online between 2-4 hours a month.
Deadline: September 11, 2015.

Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever Nobel Peace laureate, has vowed to continue fighting for children's rights. "As an adult, you can be the voice of children," she said.

The Pakistani education activist, who was shot in the head in 2012 by a Taliban gunman, marked her birthday with refugees in Lebanon. She warned that the world is "failing ... Syria's children."
