The Grand Moot is a cherished Jackman Law tradition and a highlight of the academic year, bringing together four of the Faculty's strongest mooters before a distinguished panel of Canadian jurists.

This year's moot examined the intersection of Charter rights, environmental pressures, and legislative decision-making, through a case involving an AI data centre and its impact on a remote community's access to water.

Congratulations to Evan Tanovich and Aaditya Juvekar, counsel for the appellant, and Rory Banfalvi and Madeline Ritter, counsel for the respondent, on their impressive advocacy. The mooters received glowing praise from the judges for the quality of their submissions and performances.

Join leading scholars from Canada, the United States and New Zealand for the Rule of Law Symposium: The War Against Law, exploring debates around common good constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Inspired by University Professor David Dyzenhaus’s recent book, The War Against Law: What’s Wrong with Common Good Constitutionalism?, the symposium will examine these questions through debates surrounding the 2024 Rwanda Act.

What happens when an unexpected turn opens your eyes to new possibilities?

For Mark Tan (JD '06), a career in software development led him to law school — and eventually to a global legal career spanning Canada, New York, Australia, and Singapore.

"What really stuck with me was how open and embracing the law school was...the law school really opened my eyes to so many possibilities."

Today, Tan gives back to Jackman Law through support for bursaries and scholarships, helping create opportunities for students to discover possibilities of their own.

The rule of law is meant to provide stability — but what happens when its meaning begins to shift?

Professor David Dyzenhaus explores how contemporary debates about judicial authority, executive power, and the "common good" are reshaping how the rule of law is understood in modern democracies. Focusing on developments in the United Kingdom, he examines how the legal arguments that appear to defend constitutional order can also, over time, shift how limits on government power are interpreted and applied.

As he puts it, it is possible for there to be “a wholesale change in how our constitutional order works, even though the institutions themselves would remain in place.”
