Captain Richard Austin Brown, M.C. was one of our own from Zeta Psi Toronto.

Lest we forget.

100 years ago today, Captain Richard A. Brown, MC, died of wounds at the age of 21. He attended SAC from 1908-14. He won the Military Cross for his actions as a Lieutenant at Vimy Ridge on April 9th, 1917 and served through the fighting of that summer before Lens and at Hill 70, however he was mortally wounded in the head while in command of his company on November 9, 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele and died of his wounds on November 14th.

The brothers of the Theta Xi Chapter of Zeta Psi Fraternity (Zeta Psi Toronto) gathered around at The Soldiers' Tower Memorial Room and Carillon in University of Toronto to pay tribute to those who fell during the wars and the veterans. A wreath was laid in honour of our brothers who have fallen during the war and the U of T's fallen students.

Among the war dead of Zeta Psi Toronto, includes Lt. Col. John Alexander McCrae, MD (Theta Xi 1894), the author of "In Flanders Fields." This year marked the 100th Anniversary of his poem on May 3rd, 2015:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae, MD. (Theta Xi 1894 of Zeta Psi Fraternity)

Happy Canada Day to all Canadian brothers and friends of the fraternity!

Zeta Psi stands being the LARGEST fraternity in Canada at the moment and it was THE FIRST fraternity to be established in Canada.

Also, interestingly, the Dominion of Canada was formed 20 years and a month after Zeta Psi was formed.
(Canada: July 1, 1867 | Zeta Psi: June 1, 1847)

Here is to another 148 years of our home and native land!

Yesterday marked the Centennial (100 years) Anniversary of the "In Flanders Fields" by our own brother, Lt. Col. Dr. John Alexander McCrae (Theta Xi 1894). His beautiful poem moved the world. The poem, "In Flanders Fields" was written by Br. McCrae after the memorial service he presided for his close friend Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres (WWI). Br. McCrae has passed away less than three years later his friend's death on January 28 of 1918.

To honour our brother, Zeta Psi Toronto has attended the University of Toronto's Carillon Recital at The Soldiers' Tower Memorial Room and Carillon and John McCrae Commemoration Service at the Music Room in Hart House this afternoon.

The carillon recital was performed by Gordon Slater, Dominion Carillonneur emeritus. Later, the commemoration service was hosted by Major (Ret.) David Platt, CD. During the service, the Hart House Chorus has performed a beautiful setting of the poem, "In Flanders Fiedlds" by Malcolm McGrath.

The recital and service was attended by Brothers Jeff Ball (Theta Xi '79),
J. Y. John Lee (Theta Xi '16), Charles-Jaret Bourassa (Theta Xi '17), Alexandros Mihas (Theta Xi '16), and Samuel Hayden (Theta Omicron '16).

In addition, Zeta Psi Toronto has dedicated two poppy wreaths in memory of Br. McCrae. One was presented to the Soldiers' Tower Memorial Room and another was gifted to the In Flanders Fields Fund (Zeta Psi - AU) for their commemoration service at the DC War Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC held today.
Special thank you to Hatcher Florist for producing two beautiful poppy wreaths.

Today marks the 136th year of Zeta Psi in Canada. On March 27th of 1879, the Theta Xi Chapter (Zeta Psi Toronto) was chartered with the help of our Xi brothers from University of Michigan.

Currently, we stand as the FIRST fraternity chapter established in Canada. And we are the LONGEST-STANDING fraternity chapter in Canada at present.

Also, there are SEVEN active chapters (U of Alberta, Western U, Waterloo-Laurier, UOIT, Brock U, Queens U, and Trinity College Dublin) in the fraternity that bears the Theta designation that derives from us (just like Xi has helped building us, we have helped to build these seven chapters).

The Theta Xi Chapter recognizes the everlasting efforts and works of her brothers. Their works have not been forgotten. After 136 years, Zeta Psi Fraternity currently stands as the LARGEST fraternity in Canada.

Happy chapter day to our Theta Xi brothers and here's to another 136 years in Toronto AND Canada!
