Massey College Where people and ideas intersect. Massey College is a graduate residential college in the University of Toronto.

It was established in 1962 and the building opened in 1963. The college admits Junior Fellows from the university's School of Graduate Studies and the U of T's graduate professional programs. About 60 live at the college, with another 70 or so affiliated as non-resident Junior Fellows. Senior Fellows are selected from the world of academia, with some serving on the corporation that governs the college. The college is also home to the Canadian Journalism Fellowships.

Heritage at Risk | Massey Dialogue

What happens to our cultural heritage when war and conflict put libraries, archives, museums, manuscripts, films, rare books, and artefacts in danger?

Join Massey College and the ALIPH Foundation for Heritage at Risk, a Massey Dialogue exploring why cultural heritage matters, what makes an object a heritage item, and the people working around the world to protect collections threatened by conflict and crisis.
Featuring Dr. Sandra Bialystok of ALIPH Foundation, Dr. Maria Luisa Russo of AMALIA, Dr. Alexandra Gillespie of the University of Toronto and Old Books New Science Lab, and Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. The panel will be moderated by Robbie Steele, PhD Candidate in English and Massey Junior Fellow.

Join us for the inaugural Massey Arts Society cocktail reception, The Arts at Massey: Creative Work for the Public Good, on October 9.

This new series of receptions will bring together members of the Massey arts community with leading artists and arts facilitators in Canada to explore the role of creative work in our communities.

Our inaugural conversation will focus on the impactful work happening within the Massey College community and how we can continue to direct creativity, collaboration, and the arts in service of the public good.

Canada and the U.S., Interrupted! Journalists on the Front Lines
The once-reliable relationship between Canada and the United States is under strain. As leaders on both sides of the border navigate this new reality, journalists are working to counter mis- and disinformation with evidence-based reporting and analysis.

Join us at Massey College on Friday, September 25, from 4–5:30 p.m. for a timely dialogue with David Walmsley, Editor-in-Chief of The Globe and Mail; Matina Stevis-Gridneff, Canada bureau chief for The New York Times; Dr. Marci Shore, American historian and professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs; and moderator Anne-Marie Fowler.

The dialogue precedes a High Table celebrating journalism and the 2026–27 William Southam Journalism Fellows. Proceeds support the William Southam Journalism Program.

Throughout the summer, the Public Goods Café is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Junior Common Room (JCR), offering a selection of hot and cold beverages as well as freshly baked goods.

Please note that there may be occasional closures (such as this Friday). Any changes to operating hours will be communicated through our social media channels.

When public events, such as major soccer matches, are taking place, we will also strive to host community viewing parties in the JCR.

The JCR is intended to be a welcoming, casual gathering space for the Massey community, so we encourage you to stop by, relax, and enjoy the space throughout the summer.

Author Suzanne Simard joined Dr. James Orbinski at Massey College for the Ramsay/Massey Breakfast, where they discussed her new book, When the Forest Breathes: Renewal and Resilience in the Natural World. Drawing on decades of groundbreaking research, Simard reflected on how her work has transformed our understanding of forests as interconnected living systems, linked through networks of trees, fungi, and soil. In conversation with Dr. Orbinski, she explored themes of cooperation, resilience, and renewal in nature, emphasizing how these hidden relationships sustain forest ecosystems and offer lessons for the broader world.
